Handmade hats - what needs to be on the tracking label?

Can someone tell exactly what needs to be on the tracking label for handmade hats for small children?

I should mention that my hats are made of 100% cotton, I think that matters (something about wool???)

The FTC does not require you to label hats, but the CPSIA does require a tracking label. It does not differ from other tracking labels, so that makes it easier. It needs to say your (company) name and address, or website. It also needs where and when the item is made. I put what it is made of, but that may be a FTC only thing. I just figure people would want to know that. I think the wool issue is a FTC thing also. Love hats for the little ones!

I have seen some posts that people put the month and year for when it is made. Is that sufficient or is a full date required? For "where" is city and province/state sufficient?

I understand that month and year of completion is adequate, nico. "Where" should be city,state or province, and country.

Again, I will post what I wrote on my blog. I put in what I have found from reading the forums and gov websites until my eyes went in opposite directions! But if anyone has new etsy sellers of handmade lables to add to my blog, let me know, would be more than happy to give them a shout-out.

That link is for the FTC labeling. You also need CPSIA tracking labels for children's items.

I think this only applies if you are located in, or shipping to, the us.

Cotton items need ftc labels, but hats are excluded. Other items made from cotton are not. So if you make hats out of anything but wool you are do not need an FTC label. BUT if you mention in your advertising or description, what the hat is made of, then you must also have and FTC label. Got it? Plain as dirt right?????

I thought I would check some baby outfits I received from my sister-in-law in Texas and noticed that one outfit actually states "Spring 2010" as Manufactured date. Can we use something as vague as "Spring"?

Yes you may, as long as you can identify to the gov if asked when you made it and what was in the product.

I use the code 10JFMAMJJASOND11 on my label, along with the other needed information. I make a thread stitch under the year and the letter of the month that I make the item. Works for me, and will last 2 years.
