Fleece...is it exempt?

Does anyone know if fleece is exempt? I'm considering doing a fleece lining in my earflap hats! This would make them warmer for winter! Anyhow i was curious if it was exempt like yarn is! still have to label but no testing!

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

The current list of exempt raw materials and the reasoning certain items will never be exempt are here http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/frnotices/fr09/leaddeterminationsfinalrule-draft.pdf . It does not specifically state fleece is exempt from the lead testing or that it's not exempt, it may depend on the origin of the fibers in the fleece, is it wool or made from recycled soda bottles

Remember even if a product is made from all exempt materials it only means it's only exempt from the lead testing not any other parts of the CPSIA like the phthalate testing if applicable to the product category or any of the FTC laws if they apply.

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

Just off the top of my head, isn't fleece usually polyester? (I think jewelrydesigns may have been thinking of felt.) Polyester is on the exempt list, right?

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

My fleece is 100% polyester, so it's exempt. I have never seen wool fleece, but I have heard of it. Wouldn't something that comes from a sheep be exempt?

I could have sworn there was an "all fabric exempt" thread before.

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

The CPSIA states that you can not use certain items if it is intended for persons under the age of 12. So can you sell fleece items on Esty if they are intended for adult use?

Forgive my ignorance. I'm new to the site and still learning the ins and outs.

You're close to correct. If you are making items for children 12 and under (under age 13), CPSIA has added testing for lead and phthalate (selected types of plastic). There is a list of exempt materials which have been deemed to never have lead. These items are precious and semi-precious jewels, precious metals and stainless steel, fabric and yarn.

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

Thanks for posting this! I've been wanting to post some fleece blankets in my shop for winter, but I didn't know if they were exempt from testing so I didn't bother putting them in. Now I will :)

Re: Fleece...is it exempt?

Wow, I knew nothing about this. I was thinking of adding children's clothing to my store. If I make dresses and such for children do I have to have special labels for them? Does the fabric need to be tested? I'm thankful that Etsy wants to protect our children like this!
