Finally, A Media Report with Understanding

This may have been posted before on the list as it is about one month old, but I just came across it and want to share it with any who have not seen it. NY Times article on Small Business (particularly handcraft) and CPSIA. At least one reporter understands what the problems are reporting it as bad as CPSIA is.

Re: Finally, A Media Report with Understanding

finally, a little sanity!! the one thing i don't like about the article? they failed to mention that it applies to children's clothing and accessories as well... this stupid regulation is so wide-spread, i swear they're going to start requiring that kids themselves be tested and certified. wouldn't that be something...! anyway, the more the media recognizes the ridiculousness of this, the better. maybe someday soon the handmade community will have our big day: freedom from cpsia!!

I thought wood was on the "okay" list??? Was the problem with the walnut oil the small shop owner was using?

Thanks for sharing! I work for a medium-size US based games manufacturer & we often worry about this issue.

Re: Finally, A Media Report with Understanding

I just heard a report on NPR this AM, which actually brought up the fact that these rules will be impossible for small businesses to follow. That is the first bit of reporting that I've seen or heard that talks about the impact to artists making handcrafted items for kids.

Re: Finally, A Media Report with Understanding

Another media story - that had to come from the wire services, so it must have been seen across the country - appeared in a large regional newspaper yesterday about a consumer advocacy group PRAISING CPSIA - and going further to state that the law is NOT STRICT ENOUGH - and more legislation is needed to make other substances in children items that they don't like banned or restricted.

These groups are the ones that introduced this law and they will get their way again - unless there is a louder voice to Congress from those hurt by these laws.

If they have their way, your children would grow up in a bubble - one of course not made of anything. "hazardous".

Re: Finally, A Media Report with Understanding

alrighty, then, pro-cpsia groups... lobby away, but when your favorite products are no longer available, don't come crying to any of us!!

omw, seriously... what is WRONG with people? all this unnecessary cpsia junk is reminescent of a communism. crazy. i sent two emails directly to the president in hopes that maybe, just maybe, he'll see it. regardless of my personal views regarding him, he DOES have some pull when it comes to lawmaking, so i figured it wouldn't hurt to try to go right to the top. there's got to be SOMETHING we can do... we've got to take the cpsia down. it's getting way out of hand!
