Okay, with the stay I thought I might try to relist some of my felt food. However I want to be sure I understand correctly. I use polyester felt made of recycled soda bottles. Since they were made of plastic, I'm a little unsure as to whether or not poly felt could be considered phthylate free? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Also what about velcro? Would that be considered in the zippers, buttons, snaps, etc. category, i.e. not exempt. I don't use it a lot in kids items, but I do use it on my bibs and my small pouches. While I'm not planning on making any new bibs until this mess is cleared up, I have a stack of them I was getting ready to list when the whole CPSIA issue came up.

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

Got so confused over this whole thing I haven't been at my machine for two weeks. I think I'm ready to go back with confidence that I will be able to sell what I make.

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

i think i should say, i found no connection between polyester and the six banned phthalates.

apparently there's a whole mess of phthalates, but six of them are more harmful than others?

these are the banned ones:

# DEHP
# DBP
# BBP
# DINP
# DIDP
# DnOPA

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

I use eco felt as well for my play food, i called the Kunin Group (manufacturer) & they said their felt does NOT contain phthalates OR lead (duh on that one!). So sew away! ;)

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

oh, i found this, too:

Safer Plastics

#1 PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate)–used for most clear beverage bottles, such as 2-liter soda, cooking oil bottles and peanut butter jars. One of the most commonly recycled plastics on the planet.

#2 HDPE (high-density polyethylene)–used to make most milk jugs.

#4 LDPE (low-density polyethylene)–used in food storage bags, some cling wraps and some squeeze bottles.

#5 PP (polypropylene)–used in opaque, hard containers, including some baby bottles and some cups and bowls. Drinking straws and yogurt containers are sometimes made with this.

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

I'm in contact with Aplix (another hook-and-loop manufacturer). They're in the process of testing and should have results in a week or so for phthalates and lead.

Yes, thank you so much for your hard work! I must need to take a class in looking things up, I always just find a million things I'm NOT looking for, LOL! I just need to know about basic polyester fleece- not eco fleece.

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

OK! Search on web for CPSIA on 3M products and am blocked to view their certificates unless I register with a preauthorized access code. So, I won't be buying their products.

Re: Felt and velcro - included in textile exemptions?

awe, thanks back, ladies. i've learned a lot, which is what drives me to keep reading. it's inspiring. :)

yes. polyester is not related to the six banned phthalates.

arcylic, tho... is PVC [?], from what i could tell... and i haven't been able to certainly certify if it's related, or not. some PVC uses phthalates, some does not. in fiber, it might be such a low amount that it doesn't matter. which is what the yarn presentations claimed, that it was well below the limit.

i'm hoping someone else can look deeper into it, make calls, etc.
