FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

They have re-arranged some of the guidelines for soap and cosmetics. Here's a link if you'd like to check it out.

http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm074201.htm

For the most part soap is ok, just make sure you market it properly.....

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

I wish everyone would follow their rules. I wish I could claim that my soap helps with acne, eczema, dandruff.....but I can't and other people shouldn't either.

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

Im kinda confused as what to say..for example
The Body Shop® difference: When the seasons change, so can your skin — and sometimes not for the better. Our new Tea Tree range with a triple blend of natural active ingredients — Community Trade tea tree oil, lemon tea tree, and tamanu oil — work together to keep skin clear by helping to prevent blemishes and blackheads, and controlling excess oil. No matter what kind of climate you live in, using our Tea Tree range as your daily skin care regime will help combat existing blemishes, prevent future breakouts, and control oil and shine all year long.

This isnt violating the FDA stuff? Im lost..

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

Osayin - I *think* it's because they are making a cosmetic claim and follow the cosmetic guidelines.

-------------------------
"And as long as personal care product formulators adhere to FDA's distinctions between cosmetics and drugs, the agency will be happy. Cosmetics, it says, are "applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or function."

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

I think providing a history on ingredients, say for mint being beneficial, but not actually claiming the cure is a good protectant...but i could be wrong....just want to get the right info out. ; )

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

From the way I read the guidelines, IF you stake a claim to something you have to list the 'active ingredients' so you can make certain claims.

Testing is highly recommended and having your paperwork on file is a definate way to back up your claims too.

I'm currently working on my testing and filing.

Re: FDA Guidelines for Soap and Cosmetics

Agreeing with Sugarpineboutique...
For instance, Lavender soap with lavender essential oil:

You can say that the lavender oil in your soap has been shown to be good for relaxation and sensitive skin...

BUT you cannot claim YOUR SOAP improves relaxation and/or soothes sensitive skin.

That's how I've always known it to be, along with the labeling as it being soap.

I include net wt., and all ingredients in order of weight, although I don't think this HAS to be listed if you are selling "soap".
