Don't know if coconut buttons are approved by CPSIA

Hello Everyone!
I just had a prospective customer asking me if my coconut or covered buttons met the requirements for CPSIA. This is totally new to me, I am not sure where to start for my search. I sell buttons trims and supplies and never had this question asked to me. Does anyone have an idea of where to look? How do i find something so specific.

Any advise will be appreciated!

Re: Don't know if coconut buttons are approved by CPSIA

Coconut shell by itself is a natural non-toxic substance. It is actually one of the most widely used substrates used in keeping frogs (frogs are highly sensitive to toxins) because it is completely safe if ingested. I believe it is considered a wood product, and if so, it is exempt from CPSIA. Having said that, if any coatings, sealers or anything has been applied to the coconut, that would change things. Hope that helps. If you want to be 100% sure, I would start by contacting the manufacturer of you buttons.

Sorry I don't have the link but you can go to the CPSC site, look for the lead determinations final rule PDF from Aug 2009. It's 65 pages. Look at page 15/16 #2 plant and animals. I think you will find you answer re coconut used for buttons.
