Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

I saw someone once post something on here about getting a diaper cake CPSIA qualified, etc.... but I am thinking about making small diaper cake centerpieces. They use lots of items that are not suitable for children. They would be decorative centerpieces for tables at a baby shower. I wouldn't think these would need to be CPSIA compliant as they are not for the child. They are party decorations for a BAby Shower. So what doyou think?

I'm no CPSIA expert, but I'm thinking that as long as you mentioned it wasn't for kids, in this case, I would believe it. It seems like a really strange thing to give to a kid.

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

hmmm that's a hard one... put together as a center piece it is not for kids but clearly the items in it are meant to be kept and used for babies afterwards

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

That's definitely tricky, but maybe reading too much into it as well.

My only compliant about diaper cakes is the diapers get rolled up and are hard to use sometimes afterwards. Don't get me wrong those things are cute. My friends just have said they are a pain afterwards.

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

This isn't a "legal" answer, just what makes sense to me:
The overall decoration is for an adult, so the entire thing as a whole shouldn't need to be tested under CPSIA.
But any parts of the whole that are then used on children would have to pass.
It seems like the right thing would be to keep the original tags & labels on the items, & save the original packaging. Maybe hide it on the inside of the cake- I don't know how they're put together- so that they're available when it's taken apart and used.

That's if you're buying the things and not making them. If you're making cloth diapers or something for it, that would probably be exempt from testing but would need to be labeled.

...and cute as they may be, I just don't think the words "diaper" and "cake" should be used in the same sentence. bleh. makes me glad I'm on a diet. :-)

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

I agree with you barbedwiredream, but i make the spiral boutique kind and all the new parents have to do is cut a piece of ribbon. I'm getting some great tips on here, i'm still fairly new to the etsy family.

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

I used to ask the same question, what in the heck is a diaper cake?! Nothing like that around when my 4 adult daughters were babies then my daughter got one as a gift at her baby shower and it was really neat.

trimgoddess-a layer cake made with diapers, baby toys, baby lotions, etc. instead of actual layer cake ;)

Re: Diaper Cake Centerpieces?

Thanks cutiepiegifts, that was an eye opener!
Whew, another application I knew nothing about that would use nice ribbon trim embellishments!
Anyway, isn't there another name for them, as 'diaper cake' invoques something else entirely, more like contents of a used diaper! ?
