Covered Buttons?

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone had any information on the safety of the standard metal (aluminum) buttons that people cover with fabric and make into hair accesories etc. While my hair accessories are not specifically aimed at children, I am trying to find out more information on this just in case the issue should arise in the future...
The buttons, while distributed by a variety of companies, seem to all come from the same wholesale source, but finding more info has been a challenge so far.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Covered Buttons?

Thank you! Unfortunately, the only button company on the list so far is Dritz, and as far as I know they don't supply these type of buttons (at least not here in Canada?) Lots of other useful info on there, though!

Re: Covered Buttons?

Melissa,

I tested them last week. If you purchase from etsy seller fiddlerscreekdesigns you are good to go. All sizes were safe.

Re: Covered Buttons?

Contact the manufacturer of the buttons you are using or any button you intend to buy and see if they have testing data. No matter who you buy from you are going to need written documentation that the buttons are safely under the required limits and have been tested. Of course, this is only until 2/10/10 - after that you are going to have to get the testing done yourself at a 3rd party approved lab for each lot you make.

Re: Covered Buttons?

If I remember correctly, metal that is inside and inaccessible under normal circumstances, is given a pass. I would think any covered button would fit this exemption.

The only children's safety issue would be for choking hazards and you already have that covered in you description.

Re: Covered Buttons?

I order mine from coverbuttons.com. They say that they are compliant. Here is the email

The cover buttons are manufactured in the USA.
The cover buttons are made out of aluminum and contains less than 100 ppm which is well within the standard 600 ppm.

Hope this helps!

Re: Covered Buttons?

This post is really interesting - I make pillows and on some of the designs I use covered buttons - I buy mine from a local store (I'm in Canada) - my question is - do all buttons have to fall into this compliant box - I had never heard of this and am wondering if I'm selling something I shouldn't!

Thanks
Lily
