Children's clothing labels question?

Hi all! I'm new here and hoping to start up a shop selling clothing for children. I stumbled across the CPSIA requirements and am simply overwhelmed by all of the information. I hope someone can help me.

Is there a way to fit all of the required information on just one tag?

What if you do not know the content of the fabric used? (I get fabric from multiple places and some of it I have had awhile and cannot even remember.)

Would a fold over tag with my shop name on the front and the back saying "Made in the USA of imported fabrics" be sufficient?

I was reading on the CPSIA site that fabrics were excluded but then see all these threads about needing tags on clothing. I am so confused. I do not add any embellishments to the clothing. It's just fabric with sewn on fabric decoration and elastic in the waistband.

Thanks for any help! I'm so glad this group is here :)

Re: Children's clothing labels question?

1. Be sure to register as a small batch manufacturer.
2. There are two different tags required for kid's items - FTC and CPSC. The FTC are the care and content labels. CPSC are tracking labels that look very much like brand labels, oftentimes.
3. I've seen no definitive info on whether *or not* you can use one tag for both FTC and CPSC labels.

Fabrics are on the exempt list for testing, I believe. They are not exempt from needing care/content tags. And as far as unknown fibers go, I *believe* you can state something like "fiber content unknown". This is a frequent question for those using recycled fabrics.

All this is to the best of my knowledge and is by no means authoritative. But I wanted to bump this up. I'll let the real experts answer the rest, and correct any incorrect info I may have included.

Re: Children's clothing labels question?

Thanks for your help! I haven't registered yet so I will do that right away. I have applied for an RN# already.

Does this for a folded tag look okay?

(front)
Landshire Lane
landshirelane.etsy.com
Made in USA of imported fabrics

(back)
Machine wash warm, gentle cycle
Tumble dry low
No bleach
My RN# here

And then I'd have an additional tag with the fiber content since everything is different. It would say something like "100% cotton" or "made of fabric remnants of unknown fiber content". I read the last one on the FTC site.

Should that be okay?

Re: Children's clothing labels question?

I have an LLC, am looking into liability insurance, and am having the same questions as stated here.

What is an RN# and how do I get one? Is that the LLC business #? Thanks.

Re: Children's clothing labels question?

A registered identification number — or RN — is a number issued by the Federal Trade Commission (not the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here is a link that will help: http://www.business.ftc.gov/content/registered-identification-number-database

Here is a link to the FTC's labeling requirements: http://www.business.ftc.gov/documents/bus21-threading-your-way-through-labeling-requirements-under-t...

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires a CPSIA tracking label on all children's product, along with several other requirements (like testing and the issuance of a Children's Product Certificate) and has other requlations/bans in place in regards to children's apparel (such as drawstrings in upper outerwear, sharp points and edges, flammability in children's sleepwear, etc.) All of the CPSC's requirements can be found here: http://www.cpsc.gov/
