Wow, yeah, love the quote from the CPSC spokesman. "to make whatever tweaks are necessary, keeping safety in mind ... but get to it in a little bit more reasonable, a sane way, because right now we're headed for a lot of chaos in the economy because of this, unfortunately."
Um, yes, and you're realizing this now?! How in the heck does a law so broad get passed with the mindset of "yeah, we'll tweak it later, but for now, we'll include everything." Genius.

Re: CPSIA is on CNN.com front page!!

Interesting. Trying to view is as if I was just a "concerned parent" and not a business at risk. If the article was the 1st I'd heard of the CPSIA, I think I'd probably feel that the "fallout" was a necessary evil. (don't personally feel that way - so don't shoot me. lol)

I wish they'd explained the particulars a little bit better, but it's still good to get exposure.

I agree it's too little too late, and doesn't give an in-depth portrayal of the whole issue.

Still, it's not making the CPSIA look like a GOOD thing, and it'll get some exposure.

Re: CPSIA is on CNN.com front page!!

I thought the recent update actually mentioned thrift stores will not need this testing?
Pity it did not mention hand made.

However, any exposure of the poor thinking behind this has to be good.
Can individuals write to CNN and push for a better, in depth report?
(I live in England.)

Linda, thrift stores are exempt from the testing, but not from liability if something with excess lead DOES get sold. If someone buys something from them, for example, and tests it and it tests high, the store can still face fines. A lot of thrift stores don't want the liability so they're closing or have stopped accepting kids' stuff anyway. :-(

Twittered it, but it's news to the general public. I tried to spread the word at work, but many still don't know.

Re: CPSIA is on CNN.com front page!!

My mom saw a story about CPSIA on CNN News last night on TV. She just walked into the room as it was about over, but said they were talking about how it will affect the thrift stores. She called me, but by the time I switched channels, the story was over.

Any publicity about this new law is good. I am having trouble getting people to understand the seriousness of it, and how it will affect all of us. The reactions I get are, "Well, they will never be able to enforce that", or "That doesn't make any sense". But if they see it on the national news, maybe they will take notice.

The general public doesn't understand the implications of the law, even worst: they don't think it will effect them but if it does, it will only be a little inconvenience.

The general public doesn't understand the law any better than the ones who actually wrote the law....

This law does not need revision - IT NEEDS TO BE SCRAPED - and if they still feel the need to protect the children, they need to do real studies using honesty, integrity and common sense and not jump in just because they want to be re-elected.

There that's my 2 cents worth.....

Re: CPSIA is on CNN.com front page!!

I have a feeling the mass media might only start doing substantial widespread reporting on the CPSIA ON or AFTER 2/10/09 -- when the public starts to wonder about the sudden disappearance of handmade children's toys, clothing, and kid's books, and the sudden demise of many micro/small businesses and thrift stores.

Re: CPSIA is on CNN.com front page!!

Good article in general, but I wish it did mention the plight of handcrafted items.

I still can't believe this idiotic piece of legislation actually passed.
