CPSIA and pets?

Maybe this is kind of a dumb question, but I've been curious and haven't really been able to find the answer. Does the CPSIA, or some other government organization, require similar testing for pet products, like dog squeak toys that you get from the pet shop? These products are intended to go in someone's mouth (well, maybe not a person's mouth, but you get the point). Just wondering, thanks!

Re: CPSIA and pets?

I found this article. Apparently there aren't any standards for pet toys...

Re: CPSIA and pets?

LOL - Considering all of the disgusting things my dog eats, (i.e. digital cameras, cell phones, TV remote controls, cat poop, live frogs) I doubt a store-bought toy is going to hurt him. :D

Re: CPSIA and pets?

That article is actually pretty humorous...they're arguing about lead at 1ppm in the toy they're talking about.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

Thanks for the article SugarandSpice! Clears up what I've been wondering about.
LOL, I know exactly what you guys mean with dogs eating disgusting things! A dead porcupine!? Ouch! My dogs' lists include live worms, all manner of animal poop, and used tissues.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

The government doesn't even do a good job at monitoring what people eat or what children play with much less what dogs eat or play with!! Remember the contaminated dog food from China?

Re: CPSIA and pets?

There are rumblings going on with such companies like Petco and Petsmart. This law will affect them, but I don't have any details yet.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

Well, I guess if you really consider your pet your child 12 and under, if you want to jump threw the hoops to find a "safe" toy I guess you can. But please don't give Waxman, and Bobby Rush any new ideas. We haven't lived thru their last one.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

Hello everyone, do you know if the new cpsia law would include pet clothing? i'm a pet clothing designer and i'm using regular materials (cotton, blends), as well as doing a line with recycled materials... do you know if that's ok?

Re: CPSIA and pets?

I know I mentioned this in my other thread but since this one is specifically pet related I'll ask again here in case it grabs your attention. I thought some pet products were mentioned before under the CPSIA laws but I can't find where they're at. Anybody have a link or the huge PDF file of doom that lists everything that needs to be tested (and what for) that you can share? I was considering making pet toys and want to know if there's any laws I need to follow for that.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

I just did a search for safety regulations for pet toys. And there are no specific regulations other than general safety, like parts that can break off and be swallowed, choking hazard type things. But the ASPCA wants there to be lead laws for pets too. So, follow the rules of children, and you should be covered for pets, especially if the ASPCA gets some pushed thru. You do have to be careful of too soft or easity chewed toys for big dogs or dogs with strong bites. They can rip apart soft toys easily.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

Does that include tags? Every dog I know ends up ripping them off and eating them (two have choked on them...yeah, that's safe). Was just going to make them out of fabric, no buttons or embellishments at all that aren't fabric (eyes out of felt).

Where do you find these things?! You must be a wizard like my hubby. He seems to know all the magical Google words to find what he needs while I just get crap back.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

I heart hubby's Google magic...

So here's what I found. So far I can't see ANYWHERE that says there are regulations and I have a link for the ASPCA but it doesn't say that they're pushing for a law. The first article is from a few months ago, all the others are a few years ago.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

I'd say go for it. Use well sewn on felt for the eyes, and put a label on a hangtag that can be taken off. I print my own hangtags on my computor, using cardstock.

Re: CPSIA and pets?

And THAT sounds much easier than trying to figure out how to use my printer to make fabric tags to sew into my toys. I'm going to do it! Thanks so much for the help :-D

Though other than fabric content is there anything else I need to put on the tag? Oh, and made in Oregon, USA.

Off to plot and replan the shop!
