Just saw on the Twitter stream of Senator Jim DeMint ( http://twitter.com/JimDeMint ) that a CPSIA reform amendment has just failed Senate passage. Anyone have more details on this and what the ramifications may be? Thanks!

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

This is an amendment to the budget/spending bill I believe, not the stand-alone bill of Demint's. I think. Right?

CPSIA has turned my brain to jelly.

Just keep on the letters and calls. They need to start paying attention to what people are saying.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

"To establish a deficit-neutral reserve fund to protect small and home businesses from the burdensome and impractical requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008."

That is the bill's "summary of purpose" - beesknees is right that this is a budget/spending bill, not the stand-alone bill.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

Right it is my understanding they are voting on all the admendments to the trillion $$ spending budget. Anything that is really helpful to the small and home business will be shot down. "we're here to help you, and save your children" Right!!!!

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

We need to call them and email them again and let them know that we are watching them and what they do and that we are very unhappy with the direction they appear to be going with regards to small, handmade business....shame, shame, shame on them who want to enforce this law without regard to the tiny business that is using tested suppliers materials.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I just received a brochure from CPSIA with the actual fact in it. If you go to their website you can request it. It is very informative and easy to understand once in writing instead of on their website.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I don't want a reserve fund set up!! I want to get rid of the CPSIA law. Period. Setting up a reserve fund to "help" small businesses is just propping up an idiotic law. They need to do the right thing and get rid of the CPSIA law altogether.

I don't blame any of the senators for voting "no."

MyMotherMary took the words right out of my mouth. I do not want a fund and would not use it if had been set up. I don't want *more* tax payers' dollars going to support stupid laws.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

Very disappointed with my senator who voted against this. Funny how he isn't accessible by the web, you have to write a letter to voice an opinion. Makes me think he doesn't want to listen to us and now he's proving it by his vote. Well I guess I will prove my disappointment in him by my vote or should I say non vote for him in the future. We still have the last word.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

It's so much easier to leave things as they are than to sit down and rewrite some resolutions. That would cut into lunch breaks and 5 day weekends.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

No reserve fund is necessary if they allow exclusions for testing for more logical items that do not contain lead and the other dreaded chemicals. This amendment did not touch the crucial issue, but instead was a back door way to keep from tackling the true impact on small and cottage businesses. We don't want a ipso facto bailout, but instead for the members of the congress to use common sense.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

The fact of the matter is that CPSIA isn't going away. Does it need an amendment, absolutely. We need to continue to voice our opinions where it counts...I was lad to see both my Senators voted yea...the only right things Alaska Senators have done in the last few years.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I think nobody here wants a reserve fund to help with testing. We want to be exempted because we work with materials that don't pose a danger!

I agree completely. I do think that it was good to vote on it, if only to broaden an awareness of the ramifications of the law... I am not in favor of a reserve fund, but actually addressing the issues in the law.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

Totally agree. I wouldn't get on my lawmakers for not voting for a fund, but I would SURE get on their case for not voting for actual amendments to the law!!!

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I think this may have been the only way that Demint could get it to the floor was to make it a budget item. I don't believe that his other bills concerning the CPSIA ever made it out of committee.

reserve funding... yah right. Like I want the government any more involved in my life than they already are!

I'm so disgusted by the whole thing, I could just spit.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I think FayeMalone may be correct on this. By placing a budget line item into the bill, it could be brought to the floor during the budgetary voting periods.

Re: CPSIA amendment failed. What does this mean?

I have been speaking to a rep. from Akaka's office (Hawaii), and he is sending me a copy of the Pryor Amdt., which is offered in response to the DeMint proposal.

He explained it would give the CPSIA more flexibility to follow more "Common Sense" guidelines regarding toys/handmade products.

Common Sense is defined as ???? I don't know.

He said he will drop a hard copy in the mail and I should have it very soon.

Has ANYONE heard about this? Anyone know of a link or some source of info. regarding this?

It's new to me.
