CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

As business owners, we all have the responsibility to know the CPSIA law and to judge how it affects the products we, as individuals, make and sell. And then take measures to correct our products.

By going to the CPSC website, opening the Guidelines, everything we need to know is pretty much explained.

I used CONTROL and click on this link to open it. Not sure if you will need to.

If you click the various parts, you can get answers. If we don't take the time to read it, know what is in it, and then write letters to Congress, the media, etc., the letters will appear to contain false information and will be ignored.

I am still seeing questions, statements in threads that are not true. If sellers will only read through this Guideline, we will become a much more informed group. An informed group will have a better chance of getting changes to this law passed.

This law look so complicated. I had a request to sell some kids clothes to a store in the US but I dont think I can do it. I dont know about that new labelling new but I dont want my package to get stoped at the border ( i'm from Canada).

It's sad for you guys in the USA because this means that all the small buisnesses will have to stop making children things and only the big store that makes most of their product in china will be able to survive. It doesnt seams like this will help your economy. :(

For me, one of the most frustrating things is the fact that when we think we have a handle on what we can and cannot do, the CPSC will change it. Or the Congress. Or whomever.

I am still sort of confused on how I fall into the testing category. I've removed alot of my jewelry as I used crystals in them originally. The main focus of my business is wall art for children. I use artist acrylic paints on cotton canvas. So am I expected to send out each painting to get tested? And isn't the testing destructive to the particular item being tested? Wouldn't that mean that anything I have tested will be destroyed resulting in a non-sellable item???
I'm just lost here. I've signed the petitions, and read various articles but I'm just stumped as to how I fall into this...

Ok I read it, but it does seem to apply to me. If I make kids clothe or any textile item (as textiles is on the exempt list) I don't have much to worry about. But if I make a piece of jewelry for kids I have to have each piece tested. It seems we are paying the price for someone else's mistake.

The thing to remember about the guide lines is that is all they are, guidelines. If you read the cover sheet you find that the guide lines were prepared by staff and do not necessarily have the approval of the commission. Neither to they have the approval of your state attorney who will be enforcing this law.

The guide lines are not the law and should not be treated as such.
