Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

Why does this not surprise me:

Mattel—whose leaded toys kicked off this whole scare—beefed up its lobbying effort when the legislation appeared. The company’s lobbying budget, which had been steady at $120,000 per year from 2002 through 2006 ballooned to $540,000 in 2007 and $650,000 in 2008—a 442% increase from two years earlier.

In late August 2007, Mattel, the largest toymaker in the world, hired a new lobbying firm, Johnson, Madigan, Peck, Boland & Stewart, to lobby on the bill. One of their lobbyists on this issue was Sheila Murphy, recently the legislative director for Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic member of the Commerce Committee’s Consumer Affairs subcommittee. Klobuchar became a cosponsor of the bill in late September 2007.

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

you know I read a very old article along time ago that was basically saying it was the governments intentions to get rid of "mom and pop shops" small individually owned businesses...
i didn't think much of it at the time because I was in high school and never dreamed i would own my own business but i think we are seeing the start of it right now...

I think I said something along that lines when I first heard about the new law last month

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

Another great article. Thanks for sharing. I've long suspected that some of the "unintended consequences" were not unintended at all. It is very interesting to see how much the large toymakers, with off-shore manufacturing, spent to lobby FOR this law. A company, or industry, will not lobby FOR something, and spend that kind of money doing it, unless they expect the rate of return on that effort to be substantial. In this case, competition is eliminated, they will appear to be the heros for pushing this through, then everyone will run out and buy their cheap, plastic, mass-produced stuff that honestly will probably still contain lead because I'm sure they have found a way around following the letter of the law.

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

Perhaps a boycott of Mattel and Hasbro should be started....seems like they were/are just as much to blame for this poor legislation as our elected officials and the CPSA....even moreso since they paid $ to have it get through.

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

I am definitely not surprised that one of the major lobbyists is now a member of Amy Klobuchar's inner workings. Actually, a letter that Amy drafted to the CPSC with 4 distinct recommendations surprised me more.

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

wait, does it make ANY sense that Mattel and Hasbro even NOTICE we exist? Let alone think we affect their sales in the least bit.

We're sorta like fleas on dinosaurs in comparison.

Re: CPSIA CONSPIRACY

Ever single one of the Senators that were present for the vote, voted Yes....Republican and Democrat. And all but one Congressman voted Yes....only Ron Paul voted no. (there were only 9 members of the house that did not vote, likely because they weren't present)

This is definitely a bi-partisan DC problem.
