(for those who don't feel like clicking, it's honda's children's motorcycles)
up until now they have been regarded as a reasonable product, given parents are informed of risks. but now they have to go because they're afraid bobby might lick the machinery?
How absolutely ridiculous! As a family who rides our 11 year old has Yamaha 50 and has had it for 4 years she has never ONCE licked it lol and my 3 year old has a Suzuki JR 50...it's much older bet the lead count is real high....better watch her close and make sure she is not sneaking in licks lol. Seriously ANY parent that is allowing their children to ride is going to be supervising first of all, secondly it's a freaking motorcycle what kid is going to be thinking I think I'd rather snack on this than ride it....this is just another case in point how absurd this law is in it's current state.
Not all of them. Hence what I posted about. I am glad you are careful with your little ones. Not everyone is as responsable. But I digress, since my issues have nothing to do with lead.
homecreations: i'm sorry to hear that, if not surprised.
it certainly demonstrated the absurdity of a jr. motorcycle being discontinued in the US over a safety regulation for lead content, of all things.
ballerina & retro:
just want to clarify that i don't think the motorcycles are inherently bad, only that they carry a certain degree of risk.. and risk is at the center of this entire issue.
you minimize risks for your children by teaching them how to be safe, and the law agrees to allow you to do that. ..for motorcycles.
i don't know which is best- to ban all dangers, or require disclosure of potential concerns. (i lean toward disclosure)
i just wish they would make up their minds. any parent will tell you that the key to compliant children is consistency.

I couldn't agree with you more! They are a risk but being banned over lead content is ridiculous. Being recalled, discontinued because they are killing more children than not is one thing too. You know as a parent (and I know that not all out there are responsible or shouldn't even be allowed to breed) but ultimately it's up to ME the parent to allow what goes in and out of my child's mouth not the government. It's up to me as a parent whether I allow them to ride a motorcycle, go swimming, or any other activity that poses a risk.
Well, maybe if huge companies like Honda and other companies that are not "crafters" like us are starting to understand the ramifications of this new law, maybe things will move more quickly to amend this.
DH is LIVID with this law. He has been a motorcyclist for a number of years and rides at a near professional level, so you can imagine safety is of the utmost importance. Our son has an expressed a desire to learn and my husband has been researching for the appropriate bike for him to take on outings in the desert. This is absolutely RIDICULOUS! We feel our rights are being taken from us. Ultimately as parents, it is OUR right to decide what we choose for our children. We do not need some vampire politician hungrily sucking for voters to make decisions for us. ***steams out of room in frustration at this law***
Hubby was at a powersports store yesterday, and the guy working there told him that after Feb. 10th they won't be able to sell the inventory they have on the floor for kids atvs and bikes "because of a new law." By now hubby knows a lot about CPSIA thanks to all the time I spend researching it, and told the guy "wow that same law might putting my wife out of business."
He brought home a pamphlet for this season's new line, and in each picture is a mom/dad watching their kid in the background. The guy said now they are mandating that kids under 12 have to be supervised at all times on the vehicles, so they have to make it a point in the advertising to have an adult in the background.
We are huge Supercross fans, think about all the kids that ride on the circuit. I know one personally (he is 9) and is good, really really good. He is already sponsored and is being watched so that when he turns 16 he could be on the pro-circuit. This law is going to prohibit even something like this...
Hey, bicycles under 24" are in this law. My younger brother, and his son who is 16 are professional BMX cyclists. BMX is now an olympic sport. They use under 24" bikes, and they are as livid as the librarians.
And I see someone posted a thread about the Capitol pulling all the made in china souveniers. I thought about this earlier today, that this would affect county fairs, disneyland and all the other amusment parks. How about the sourveniers at the National Parks. It is so far reaching.
ha.. mental image of a park service employee in a landmark gift shop stocking little souvenir spoons, and getting a sudden hiss in their ear "PSSST! HEY!! Stop it!! KILLER!!!"
nah, craftychris. nothing like that. they were kind enough to let us know that resalers are considered different from retailers, and aren't required to certify or test. they just need to make "and informed business decision"
but if someone accidentally sells something that is later discovered to contain lead, they better watch out. there are potential civil and criminal penalties.
