Age 12?

I have been doing a lot of reading on the CPSIA crap and am curious as to how they came up with the age of 12 as the cut off. Anyone know? Last I checked 12 year olds were not likely to be putting stuff in their mouths. Good grief, our schools are filled with kids that age having sex and babies so I would think lead poisoning would be the least risk.

I'm not trying to diminish the problems associated with lead poisoning. Just saying that the age restriction makes little sense, in addition to all the other problems with this regulation.

The answer is perhaps even more asinine that the law. It's seems that our lawmakers were not concerned with the 12 yo putting things in their mouths, they felt that 12 yo. would have lots of younger brothers and sisters that could be harmed by the older childens toys. Incredible as it seems, that was how they came up with the scientific age of 12..... Told you it was asinine.

Wow, that is just crazy. I always assumed it was because once they reach 13 they are considered a "teen".

12 is a regular cut off point.
They are considered a teenager at 13 & no longer a child.
In the UK there is a movie classification 12, meaning not suitable for children under 12.
Also, last year they bought in a childrens car seat law in the UK where all children under the age of 12 will have to use some form of child car seat, unless they are taller than 135cm (4ft 5in). Now that really didnt go down well with kids age 9 & up who were embarrassed to get dropped off at school riding on a bolster seat they previously grew out of aged about 7!

I used to know somebody who was a middle school teacher, there was a student in the school she taught at who was pregnant--she was ELEVEN YEARS OLD!

LOL Sassy my ex's mom too. There's one state, I forget which it it--Indiana, maybe?--where the minimum height not to need a booster is 5 feet tall. My ex's mom is 4 foot 10!

Yeah, I thought the 12 year old thing was stupid too, what's worst, I've read it's not just for items that are intended for children 12 and under, but can't be apealing for them either. Have you read that at all? My daughter is 9 years old, and wants me to give her almost everything that I make. (even the pot holders cause she wants to use them for beanie baby beds or something) Ugh!

king good question. Cause when I was 11 or 12. The boys use to make water balloons out of the condoms they handed out in the sex ed health classes. heehee.

if my 9, 10, & 12 year old children help to make the items in my shop......... why can they not use them?

Oh good grief. According to their theory I need to cordon off most of my house. My toddler likes to play with all sorts of things intended for adults. When he was teething his favorite thing to chew on was the dog's leash. And, I know people in their late teens who have baby siblings in the house. *sigh*

People don't have to put something in their mouths to get the effects of lead. It can be breathed in from fibers. I disagree about 12 year olds not putting things in their mouths. I am in the schools systems everyday and kids love to chew on pencils, necklaces, collars, etc. even in high school.

As the mother of a 12 year old, I think that is the common age by which children no longer play with "toys."

They have all switched over to video games, iPODs, and cell phones by the age of 12. :-)

tutu, yes, very sad. Apparently, there was a big want for pacifiers a few years ago among teens cause they were doing some kind of drug that gave them the urge to suck on things.

Good grief. If they're worried about 12-year-olds having younger siblings... when I was in college, my roommate's mom gave birth to a baby boy. When she was 21. So why not make the cutoff age 21 then, since her jewelry and things could potentially be played with by her younger brother?
