Is reselling allowed now on Etsy? Even in handmade?
It has been proven that AI images cannot be copyrighted as it was not created by a human. This was proven by the US copyright office in the “Zarya of the Dawn” case. It is also know that AI programs where trained on copyrighted images without artist consent.
That said, the people that pay to use these programs are just purchasing images to resell. They did not make the artwork and they are reselling them, digitally and on products.
So my question is… is reselling officially allowed now on Etsy? If people can purchase AI images and resell them on Etsy, even in the handmade category … can we not all purchase anything we like and resell it? We should be able to resell with other art as well. Candles, jewelry, clothing… everything.
If Etsy does not allow the resale of other items it’s complete discrimination against those resellers who want to. It’s also completely against Etsy’s own rules, as AI images are not a craft supply or a vintage item. To allow the resale of purchased images, digitally or on products, and not the resale of other art items is unfair.
I believe Etsy needs to examine their own rules and decide to be fair to all sellers. If reselling is not allowed for all these other items, neither should the purchase of an AI image to resell.
I have been with Etsy for years. I love Etsy… but I think they should make all their sellers play by the same rules… or a class action could possibly ensue.
