making prints from originals

Hello team mates,
I am taking an original mixed media drawing to our local UPS store for a color copy print. (at this time, funds don't allow me to do this in a more professional manner.)

My question is this:

When you have prints made of your work, how much white space or border do you include in the finished print, for framing purposes?

Look forward to hearing back from members of the team! thanks, Angela

Re: making prints from originals

Angela, brilliant question! This, of course, is entirely up to the artist, but I've had a professional giclee printing studio in England tell me that at least 5cm for large work (16x24in) and at least 2cm for small work (approx 5x7in); I'm curious what other artists have found works for them? I might also call up a local professional printing studio and ask them for advice too ;o). I hope this helps ;o)

hugs,
brienna

Re: making prints from originals

Hello,
I am also a giclee printer. When I do work for people the border left is dependent on the image size. On small works i.e. 8x10 you can leave a 1" border. Anything else should have a 2" border. It gives a nice balance to the art when being showcased in a sleeve.
I also want to say that the color copy that you get will be of no comparison when you use better printing. There is a big difference in quality, inks and papers used. I would also speak with a few giclee printers and see what the pricing options are, and if they accept payment. I do this for my artist...so maybe you can find someone who shares in your dream.
Have a great day
Taylour
