Watermark advice. Do you use them?

Hi all! I'm looking for some advice on digital watermarks :)

What does everyone think of them? I've listed my work on several art portfolio sites, and what I've noticed is that other artists are not using watermarks on there images. Personally I'm really worried about this because I know artists often get ripped off by companies who replicate their prints without permission. But the other thing I'm worried about is if my work can still become popular on art portfolio sites while I can watermarks? Do they detract too much from the art? Are they too ugly? Or are they absolutely necessary?

All of my examples are in my shop and I'd love some advice.

I do use them on large images, but I try to keep them as discreet as possible so they show up in treasuries better,

Lisa I just had a look at your shop (your art is absolutely lovely by the way) but I can't see any watermarks on your images at all? Are they just so discreet that I can't see them? I think I'll so a head and make mine a lot smaller.
