New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

As an intaglio printmaker there has always been a thorn in my side with Catagory representation called Prints.
As an intaglio printmaker I find no good representation between the newer and older "prints". I can not understand printmakers selling an original work of art compared to a reproduction. Pricing a photo reproduction is like a poster, or a card you can buy at a very low price. Because it may only cost 5 cents and takes a few seconds to reproduce.
My intaglios which can be reproduced called editions are still hand ink, hand wiped and hand printed.
And the pricing usually equals the work.

A Gilcee print is a photo reproduction via an ink jet printer. Time and money
Spent to create these items are not equal.
An image originally created work sold by reproduction is different.
Gilcee print,a digital mechanical means of a digital printer , it is not hand made.
So, I would like to see etsy expand its categories to include
Fine Art Prints. There already is fine art ceramics. Fine art is used elsewhere.
To allow for these differentiations.
It's easier for a viewer to make the distinction right away!
I hope I made myself clear and should no way reduce what other people are doing.
I believe this is a very important topic.

I'd like to hear from fine art print makers.

Thanks

Re: New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

This was a popular subject among the printmakers of 3tsy back in the day when 3tsy was a "handmade" site. Alas trying to get the mellennial business analysts to understand the difference between reproductions and hand pulled prints was like trying to get Walmart to carry only made in USA goods. It is a bottom line issue to them more sales volume more cash and let the buyer beware. Just like the manufactured goods are now marketed under the handmade moniker.
Hopefully you have something in your descriptions that differentiates and educates the buyer.
Good luck!

Re: New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

Thanks for your response.
Does Etsy no longer use "handmade"?
Let me ask you this would you be willing to add you name to a request to etsy?
I know there are not a lot of printmakers, but I ask only because it may be the only way to portray our art.
It doesn't make sense to me to have fine art ceramics but no fine art prints.
You can't be much more handmade!?

How can a multi million dollar business not help with the distinctions?

If they knew we have an option, maybe as a group we can present this idea!

Well, I know that Martha Stewart has created a handmade site, but I am not certain if 2d work is included. Also, Amazon has a newer section. Called 'Fire"?

Well, I'll close with this.
There are laws regarding representation of art, some states may differ, but I can't see how "prints" can not have sub groups.

Thanks for the discussion

Re: New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

I completely agree with you D and I remember this subject being debated on Etsy in the past. Nothing has ever come of our concern as far as I know. I too have tried to "educate" the Etsy buying public by using careful descriptions of my fine art etching prints. Yet, there remains confusion about our prices compared to the "computer prints" we stand beside in the same Etsy category! I keep looking for a fine art print online site to come up to take the place of Etsy but so far I have found nothing. Good luck:(

Re: New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

Just an update.
I did in fact decide to send a request to the etsy
Contact / or share department for consideration to give fine art printmaking its own Catagory, to be called "Fine Art Printmaking".
This really shouldn't be a big deal, with something that has so much tradition.
And it never hurts to ask.
It's a start.
I expect to hear from someone shortly.
They said they'd respond.

Just for an update.
Never heard a word from the etsy section
In which you email,
Under "contact etsy support".
I thought 2 months was long enough for a reply.

Re: New Catagory:FINE ART PRINTS

I think a better category name would be original prints. Giclees, even though they're no more original than a Xerox (or a mimeograph copy) are called "fine art prints" too.
