Lactuca virosa

Also Known As
Bitter lettuce, Laitue vireuse, Opium Lettuce, Poisonous Lettuce, or Rakutu-Karyumu-So

Origin
Europe

Parts Used
Dried leaves

Traditional Use and Health Benefits
A tall leafy plant with small yellow buds, Wild Lettuce can be found growing in much of Central Europe, Southern England and North America. It has been used for centuries as a folk medicine, enjoying renewed popularity in the 1970’s as a painkiller and for its supposed recreational benefits.

Wild Lettuce Benefits
Pain Relief

Otherwise known as “Opium Lettuce”, this plant does not contain any opiates and is entirely legal. Its pain relieving effects come from the milky white substance it excretes, lactucarium, whose active compounds are comparable to the distilled, synthetic versions found in prescription painkillers. The main active compounds in lactucarium are lactupicrin, lactucin and lactucopicrin. These compounds have been found to possess analgesic activity, along with sedative activity. One study claimed that a mere 30 mg/kg dose of lactucopicrin is similar to a 60 mg/kg dose of ibuprofen. The compounds found in the lactucarium work in the way morphine does, directly impacting the central nervous system, blunting its ability to feel pain.

It is recommended by herbalists as a remedy for severe migraines and is especially effective for women who suffer acute pain during their menstrual cycle.

Sedative

The pain relieving qualities of Wild Lettuce also aid in relaxing the body. This makes it very useful in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety, with it also called a feeble opium because it does not upset the digestive system. However, it is said to produce a euphoric, dreamy effect making it much easier to drop off to sleep.

This sedative effect make it especially beneficial to an overactive nervous system and it’s particularly good for hyperactive children.

Respiratory Health

Wild lettuce can be used as a natural treatment for asthma and coughs. The powerful herb helps reduce irritation of the bronchial tubes and lungs. It’s also able to loosen mucus and difficulty breathing associated with asthma. Furthermore, it can be an effective treatment for whooping cough and bronchitis.

Typical Use
Wild Lettuce Cut Leaves
1-2 teaspoon per cup of hot water up to 3 times a day.
Herbal Tincture
2-4ml up to 3 times a day.

Piper nigrum (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning, known as a peppercorn.

It’s hard to imagine an American dining table without a black pepper grinder or shaker. A tropical vine native to India, black pepper (Piper nigrum) is reported to have become a staple of the American table after it found its way over from Europe where it was highly prized several centuries ago. And yet, is the extent of black pepper’s appeal limited to the tasty goodness it adds to any given dish? Or does it serve as a staple in herbal circles as well? You may be surprised by the medicinal uses of black pepper, not commonly revealed.

Traditionally, black pepper has been used in a variety of different remedies and for different purposes. According to Ayurveda, the pungency and heating properties of black pepper work to help metabolize food as it is digested in our system. Its heat works as a stimulant like lighting a fire might (Lad, 1984). This stimulating quality is also used to clear congestion in the respiratory system as well as other processes.

Choose whole peppercorns and store away from light ready to grind them. Look for peppercorns that are uniform and rich in color, with a strong aroma. Organically grown black pepper associated with a fair trade cooperative is highly preferable to conventional pepper. Black, green, and white peppercorns all come from Piper nigrum, and are unique in color and taste because of differences in processing and preparation.

3 Medicinal Uses of Black Pepper
Black Pepper Aids Digestion
Like many aromatic kitchen herbs, black pepper is considered a carminative in Western herbalism, and in Ayurveda black pepper is known to enkindle agni, the digestive fire (Lad, 1984). These actions are likely due to the taste of black pepper on the tongue triggering the stomach to release hydrochloric acid, which is needed to digest protein, and pepper’s ability to stimulate digestive enzymes in the pancreas (Srinivasan, 2007).

Black Pepper is an Antioxidant
A constituent in black pepper, piperine, protects against oxidative damage by inhibiting free radicals and reactive oxygen species, as well as positively influencing antioxidant enzymes (Vasanthi, 2010).

Cold and Flu Remedy
Black pepper and honey is a traditional Ayurvedic approach to respiratory congestion, helping to expectorate and dry up mucus membranes (Frawley, 1986). In Western herbalism, it is used in antiseptic cold and flu preventatives like fire cider.

Ipomoea tricolor
Morning Glory
Neptune rules this sprawling plant that can overtake a fence like a tidal wave, but lots of people put this plant with Sun because it is a sun lover. One of the happiest plants I know, this cheerful, good-hearted climber or trailer brings clarity of sight and is said to cure nightmares. The blue trumpets open early in the day and are 4-6"/10-15cm across. Historically, morning glory was used in the New World by native people for divination. When the Inquisition in Mexico realized that the Aztecs did everything they could to maintain their relationship with this plant, they resolved that the only remedy was terror and went on to burn many Indians alive for possessing these seeds, which were often found together with a small statue of a god. Morning glory is good for magickally aiding divination and astral travel. Its flower essence helps smooth out nervous energy and with addictive behavior. In response to customer questions, no morning glory seeds are now or have ever been treated with anything whatsoever. This is a myth. Interested in other Ipomoeas? Try Moonflower
