Which machine?

I am a quilter and want to get an embroidery machine. I have no idea where to start research. Any links?

I looked at all the digital patterns and see they come in many formats. Is there one standard? or more available than others?

Thank you,
Robin

Re: Which machine?

I have both a Singer Futura Xl-550 and a Brother PE 770. Both are great machines in my opinion. The brother max hoop is 5 x 7 and Singer is 6 x 10. While I love the 6 x 10 I use the Brother because a lot of designs are 5x7 and I don't like to waste stabilizer. lol
Singer does have a learning curve to it and reading the manual and follow the order of things is really important. The Singer is an all in one machine as it is both a sewing and embroidery machine and the brother is strictly embroidery. The Singer must be connected to a computer in order to embroider and for some this is a downside. Look around and learn as much as you can about the various ones out there and get one that will do what you want. :) Happy Shopping!

Re: Which machine?

I've been using Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking machines for almost 20 years and would recommend them though there are many excellent brands.

My suggestion would be to visit a sewing machine retailer in your area and ask them to give you a demonstration of all the brands that they sell. They should also tell you about the computer software that each brand uses, the formats and the hoops available. In addition you will want to have a relationship with a dealer to have your machine serviced from time to time depending on use. Quite often dealers will provide free classes to get you started with embroidering if you purchase a machine from them. Getting started can be daunting and expensive. Embroidering has given me many years of enjoyment ... it is a great hobby!
