Embroidering on double sided minky fabric

I was wondering if anyone had some tips for embroidering names on double sided minky fabric?
I had a customer last year that wanted her child's name embroidered on the back of a blanket I had for sale. Since it was the first time I have done this I did a lot of research on what type of stabilizers to use. I used a lightweight tear a way on the back and a water soluble on the front with a spray adhesive.
The practice piece came out fine so I started the actual piece and the minky poked through the embroidery, not good. So I up the stitch count (denser stitching) and doubled the water soluble on the front.
It looked great but after I washed it, it seemed to make the embroidery really dense. Not knowing if this was the way it was suppose to be (my husband said it looked great) I shipped it to my customer who also loved it.
So is there any other tips on embroidering on double sided minky? Is it suppose to feel dense, or is there something I'm doing wrong? I have more blankets I like to offer this option too.

Another way of doing this would be to place a piece of cotton fabric (hemmed or appliqued) down first then embroider on top of cotton fabric. Maryann
