Grand visions

I don't know about you but I have huge, grand visions of where I want things to go. I can see these epic, detailed photoshoots with huge amounts of props at stunning locations with amazing costumes.

I find it very hard to start with the small stuff and work up. I just want to be at the end game, right now!

Does anyone want to share any of their visions or goals?

For instance I really want to do a photoshoot for either my dolls or my fantasy series in the woods at winter with actual chandeliers strung up in the trees.

I want to do a science lab photoshoot for AGC full of crazy "it's ALIVE" vintage science equipment and strange experiments.

My biggest vision is probably my Little Sister (google Bioshock 2 little sister) I want to make a life size version, fully jointed with an animatronic face.

Why? Just coz.

A very grand costume I want to do for the fantasy series is a seraphim.

I could go on and on!

Re: Grand visions

I have been wanting to put on my very on Theatrical Belly Dance Production. Each dance group would get 15 minutes to put together a performance piece that falls into one of the following categories: Horror, Sci-fi, WWII Tribute, or Classic Video Game Montage. Someday I will do this...

Georgina you and I think alike-I have always wanted to do a crazy science lab type photoshoot which is fitting because I am a scientist during the day but I can't actually do a shoot in my lab because of government regulations so someday I hope to do one on a really elaborate set.

Re: Grand visions

My grand vision for my work?

Hm...

It would involve doing work on furniture or walls - perhaps full pillars. I would love to do something that becomes a part of the everyday household, like bed frames. Something where it really becomes a part of the identity of a house.

I'd also *love* to do very large wall hangings... like 2x3 feet or larger. Fully fleshed out, fantastical scenes. I would love to do triptychs and other things that could be put into shows, galleries, and possibly museums.

Re: Grand visions

I would love to do themed pieces, like Kirsty Mitchell-

http://www.kirstymitchellphotography.com/

I always have a vision for the pieces I am working on, but find putting a shoot together to be very difficult; so much to coordinate, and it is almost impossible to get a whole crew together at the same time. One day, though.......

Re: Grand visions

Oh yes, I have lots of grand visions when it comes to my photo shoots. I really love your idea of a winter scene with chandeliers, Georgina! But I am soooo over winter photo shoots right now, haha!! We just got a foot and a half more snow today and I was trying my hardest not to look cold and shiver while shooting, haha! That's not going to sell cozy knits!

When spring comes I'm going to have so many magical forest listings, I can't wait! I have 3 skirts made now, and I am so excited to get those listed.... I'm thinking trickling streams.... moss covered logs....

Kirsty Mitchell's photography -- WOW. Amazing! Yes, as epic as that, please!

Re: Grand visions

so how amazing would it be, to do an IHLIB photoshoot, styling only with clothing, accessories and props from our teammates? Hmmm....I am going to start pondering the particulars on making something like this happen. Maybe we could do one on this side of the pond for US teammates, and one on the other side, for UK teammates (although, they have already been doing some wonderful collaborating over there!)....thoughts???

Re: Grand visions

I think that's a great idea, Kim!! : D

So would we all send our items to one person that wants to do the photoshoot? We could do a joint US/UK project if we did that maybe....??

It's an exciting thought!

Re: Grand visions

I would be happy to volunteer to be stylist. I have a great photographer; she is very creative like me. I think we could maybe look through all the shops and cull a piece here and there for a few looks, representative of the diversity of the team. Then everyone could ship the piece to me closer to photoshoot time. I am also thinking about getting a magazine involved....

I would love our UK friends to play, but shipping is so expensive...but it would all be up to them.

Re: Grand visions

just talked to the photographer; tentative meeting set for Friday to discuss if this could work. She has been wanting to do an editorial set, so this would be ideal (in my mind, anyway!). I will keep you posted....

Re: Grand visions

I like the way you think, Kim... and Kristina, can't *wait* to see your skirts and their woodland setting!

My grand visions are currently of getting my work featured in a prominent, popular Steampunk medium such as a magazine, film or TV project.

I'd love to make it to Etsy's fabled Front Page, even just once and to have be featured in Etsy's blog.

My ultimate goal is to nurture and love this into a business that ultimately provides me with a substantial part-time income and to be able to inspire others to have courage and follow their dreams. I started with so very little last year and have come such a long way already!

Currently, my Facebook efforts are paying off. I'm creeping close to 2,000 Likes!!! My aim there is to break the 10,000 mark one day but also to have an active page where people talk to me! Encouraging conversation is tough at the moment...

Re: Grand visions

I don't think people actually use FB to converse. It seems to be a place to just post "of the moment" thoughts. I don't use it much; I have tried, but honestly, I would just rather be creating! I do love chatting live with my teammates when we all happen to be online at the same time, but beyond that, I have not found it to be a place to make many meaningful connections.
I am mostly using it as inspiration anymore, having "liked" all the costume, alt fashion and steampunk sites I can find!

Re: Grand visions

You're a step ahead of me, Kim, I still haven't figured out how to "Like" things on facebook! I made a personal page, or so I thought... I still show up as a blank face when I try to like things... You'd think I was like 80 or something. But no, I'm just a recluse that has no idea how to social network. So I'm sorry Sally-Ann, I'd converse with you if I could, but I just don't know how! I'm glad that facebook is going so well for you though, 2,000 likes, woweee!

Re: Grand visions

Kristina, almost there...1.8k and counting! When you go to your Facebook page, there is a wide rectangular image and a smaller square one overlapping it. If you mouse over the square, you should see an edit photo option pop up. Choose a jpg image and you'll no longer be faceless on Facebook...hopefully.

I have a photo in the square....haha! I wish that was the problem.... I don't know what's wrong with me... someday I'll figure it out, I hope. ; )

Re: Grand visions

I love the idea of a team photoshoot with items from our shops. I can also volunteer to do the make up for us ladies and gents.

Re: Grand visions

Kelebek, I was thinking along the lines of professional models for shooting the team items. I want to do it like an editorial spread you might see in a fashion magazine. I would have all the items shipped to me, and I would style (with a little help from my friends). I have a photographer, and a makeup artist at my disposal. Once I have a firm plan with the photograher, I can give you more info. I think most of us do a fairly good job photographing our items, but to put a whole look together with items from our team members, I think would be pretty awesome!

Re: Grand visions

I would LOVE to do a IHLIB cross seas collaboration! It bought me so much happiness to meet, friend and work with Sally and Matt - I want more!

If any of you have skype or a camera I'd love to video you over facebook or skype.

Possibly then my grandest vision would to be to hold an IHLIB convention where everyone travels to one spot and we get together for a weekend making, chatting, relaxing. That really would be heaven. xx

Re: Grand visions

Kim, I'd be more than happy to lend you an item or two from my shop for a collaborative project! It's this kind of thing that I think might get us on Etsy's Blog radar...

Re: Grand visions

Oh, wonderful, my UK friends! I really didn't want to ask that you go to the expense of shipping things, but perhaps I can pick smaller items from your stock, to keep the shipping costs low. I have started looking through the team shops, to get an idea of what I could possibly ask to borrow for the shoots. The photographer had to cancel our lunch date yesterday, and I will be out of town for a while next week, so it will be at least another 2 weeks til I have more info to share. I am hoping to put together a pinterest board to show her some ideas I have....

I have to say, we have some incredibly talented team members in UK, and other far flung countries. This is just an amazingly creative group of people, and if this works, it will be a great showcase for IHLIB. Thanks for your support of my latest wild idea.....

I love this idea. I would pay to ship to the UK. I would love to see one of my crowns in a photo shoot. You girls(guys?) have some of the best team ideas.

Re: Grand visions

Jane, and Emily, both of your shops are definitely on my list for the shoot-love the work both of you are producing. The shoot will be here in the U.S., Jane, so hopefully shipping won't be too awful for you. I am happy that this idea is exciting to all of you...

Re: Grand visions

So Kim, looking at whose interested in participating shall I send something more fantasy? I'm working on medieval styled horn headpieces, should I send one of those? That'd tie in nicely with your stuff, sally's stuff and jane's stuff.

it'd also kick me up the butt to get them done! xx
