Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

Great tips as always! This one I really need help with so I really appreciate your specific examples. Just don't know if I can do the white background for my photos. I always have trouble making them look good on a flat white surface. Or with a white background my items' colors don't seem correct.

Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

I'm glad you mentioned this.

What I always recommend is that your shop view photo be one that stands out in Etsy search results so when it appears on a page with 50 other images, it will be the one that grabs people's attention. So for the shop view photo, a stylized photo is fine.

However, I recommend having at least one secondary photo be on a white background so that when bloggers and editors go surfing for products to mention in articles, such as in the case of my customer, Design by Gam that got included in that People magazine article I referenced, a photo with a white background means they can easily place it into their editorial.

Trust me, they will not take the time to contact you to see if you can supply them with this type of photo. If they don't see it, they will just move on.

Thank you! That makes sense. I know that the white background helps photos blend in to the surrounding page and keeps things from being too cluttered. Perhaps I can work in at least one photo per item.

Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

Great examples for creating the needs in the copywriting :) I'm wondering what about for products like greeting cards or stickers? Would it sounds repetitive "Perfect for graduation ceremony or someone's special is graduating!" for a graduation card, for example?

Wow, your cards are gorgeous!

With cards, I like to end the description by creating the need of stocking up on a few cards for every type of occasion so that they are never caught without.

In terms of graduation, you can always say that it doesn't just have to be for graduating high school or college, but your little niece who is graduating from preschool or a cousin who just completed a trade program, that kind of thing. It gets them thinking of all the people in their life.

Thanks Gail - love your articles. I'm trying to include more pictures of different uses for my bows. i.e. wine decor etc. Would you ever include the .. who, what, where.. in the tags and title section? or just the description?

Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

This is a great article and thank you for the information.
I am just starting my shop up and I am ready to start writing up the products! This will help a LOT!!
The only question I have is as far as the white background, would you do that with photographs too? Perhaps put them in a frame on a white background?

Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

Yes, photographs are a different situation due to their nature. In a frame is always a good idea and in a room setting to give perspective of size.

Re: How to Create a Need for Your Products

Hiya! Thanks so much for adding me to this team! I have really enjoyed reading thru Gail's blog posts - they are so spot on, Gail! I'm new to Etsy's platform but have been working the art show circuit for the past few years now. I always found that if I can make suggestions about specific gifting ideas or types of outfits that would work with my jewelry then I can usually close the sale faster. In regards to the white background, I find that it helps take away some of the confusion of what is actually for sale in my photos (and art show displays too). I'm not good enough to be able to stage my products with props/scenery to make them look desirable haha. I sometimes use a white polystyrene light box, that I made for pretty cheap, to photograph my work or I use a neutral tone piece of china. The polystyrene is available at most craft stores like Blick Art Materials and also helps diffuse the light so there is less glare or shadows. You can light from behind the polystyrene too. There's been a lot of trial and error, but at the end of the day, my analytics reflect a higher customer interaction rate when I have a more simple, clean background. What is everyone's thoughts on collaborations as a form of marketing? I've started doing this this year with other businesses but its too early for me to see if it's working.
