Homeschooling Discussions

Do you schedule doctors appointments and such around school? Yesterday we had two appointments so we ended up not doing school at all. I was wondering what other families do on days like this. We will probably scoot Mondays curriculum into the rest of the week instead.

I don't schedule around school for doctors appointments.
I think that is one of the great things about homeschooling. You can make your own schedule.
Some times we do a little school on Saturdays. If we are having a productive day, we work ahead.

I don't schedule stuff around school. As my children's teacher, I get to carry on lessons 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I don't even try to fit it in to 8 hours a day five days a week. If I am drilling my son on math when he asks for 2 m and m's and then two more at seven o'clock at night, that more than makes up for Dr.'s, Dentists, and errands to me.

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

We do school in the mornings so I'm thinking I will try to schedule appt's in the afternoons instead. I like to have a schedule, more for me rather than her. We seem to accomplish so much more with a schedule. I even had to start scheduling out our chores (although they still don't seem to get done around here right now). So, Monday is baking, Tues is the bathroom, Wednesday is sweep and dust, etc. I leave Thurs for errands so that I'm not as tempted to drive into town every day of the week. We live 20 miles out of a larger city - our city has 8000 people so we're small. Once the rains come it's going to be harder to stay home all week so having school at set times I'm hoping will help pass the time. Except for the days when the baby doesn't follow the schedule and it makes for either a crazy day or a really long one. I'm hoping with the schooling she'll potty train too - we're going on 15months trying to master that. Ugh.

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

We start school around 8, then if we have someplace to go, we stop school, do what we need to do then, resume when we get home. We just work on it until we are finished, taking breaks for doctor's appointments, field trips, piano lessons, etc.

On days we are able to stay home and at the school table all day, we're done around lunch time, but on days we have lots of outside activities or errands, it's not uncommon for me to be teaching until bedtime to make up for the time we lost.

Sometimes I'm just too tired to do it all in one day, so we'll double up on lessons through the week as needed.

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

Yeah, lately we've had extra errands so I started making up missed projects as needed throughout the week. That seems to work ok.

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

On the rare days that we need to schedule an appointment during the day, I will try to schedule it for the afternoon - most of our schoolwork is completed by lunchtime. If the appointment must be done in the morning, we become road scholars with a math worksheet, MyAudioSchool.com, and some good books. If the weather is nice, we'll try to visit a park in the vicinity of the appointment to run off energy and explore nature. I schedule errands to coincide with our extracurricular activities. That saves me time - and gas.

But yes, schedule flexibility is one of the best perks ... no, requirements ... of homeschooling :0)

Blessings,
Rebecca

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

Schedule? What schedule? lol We try and do busy work in the morning until noon and then plan everything else for the afternoon. If we have an appointment then we take that as a learning moment and talk about all that a doctors/dentists/etc office has to offer, how to contact them for an appointment, hygiene, etc... Always learning even if we aren't doing busy work.

Re: Homeschooling Discussions

My oldest learner is only 5 and we have a seriously eclectic homeschooling style going on, so not too many things really interfere. As long as we have time to read and talk, which we always do, I count that as a successful school day!
