Hello, glad to be here! I live in the historical colonial city of Frederick, in beautiful Maryland!
A few points of interest about Frederick - Patrick street is where the British marched along their way to the White House to burn it down.
Along the way, an elderly woman by the name of Barbara Fritchie hung the American flag from outside her second floor window defying the Crown as they marched on many legs towards Washington. Her house is now a museum! Nearby, from another war, is another colonial era building which houses the Civil War Museum, and supposedly haunted.
Francis Scott Key was born and raised near Frederick. He had traveled to Baltimore to negotiate a release of one of his friends from the British. Because of the attack on Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, he could not get back to Frederick. On a ship, he witnessed the battering of Ft. McHenry from the British, and one could just imagine his and many other Americans' fears for those in and outside the fort trying to hold off the invasion.
Scott waited, as did many others, to see the damage of the fort, hoping never to see British colors. Can you just imagine how they all felt when they saw the American flag still masted, torn and shredded but still flying? What incredible hope this must have been to the defenders.
I would love to hear from others living near historical sites!
