To those who do custom orders...

Do you have any advice for me? I have always done custom orders, and of course I'd like to create just some general stock as well, but my biggest concern with custom orders TBH is how do you avoid getting too many orders at once? How do you handle the workload, the customer service, and the deadlines? How do you stay organized?

I have several different styles that I make, but they are all made to order--let's say ten different items. So if I list all ten, and if all ten of those items sold on the same day (not that they would, but because they are listed the possibility is there), how do you handle the workload and the deadlines? I was thinking I'd give each item a "one to two week" creation time, but I actually don't think I could make ten items in two weeks. So do you put a disclaimer about that in the item info?

Anyway, I probably have other questions--I'm pretty much nervous about listing items and then running into a workload issue. If you have experience in these matters, please feel free to share your insight.

I would appreciate just some general advice as well--you know, tips for the noob. =)

Thanks, guys!

Re: To those who do custom orders...

How about a statement along the lines of
'custom orders may take up to three weeks, please contact seller for more details'
I have to say, I would be very happy to be faced with the problem of too many orders!!!

Re: To those who do custom orders...

or...since all orders are custom made at time of order, delivery may take up to 3 weeks depending on the current backlog of pending orders.

Makes it sound like you're not just busy with life (LOL! as if that isn't enough) but busy with other orders.

Re: To those who do custom orders...

LOL, thanks guys--good advice, I'm going to add that to my shop announcement. It's a big fear of mine because I don't want to screw up and leave people hangin', lol. But I'm sure I won't be running into that issue anytime soon... For some reason it seems scarier with an Etsy shop because it's so official, you know? I've been doing custom orders (whether crocheting or illustrating) for years, but it's always just been on a casual level.
