Requests for Free stuff

Ugh!!! I don't get them THAT often, but I just got one from someone who sent me one a few weeks ago for her dumb YouTube channel. I didn't respond then, as I clearly state in my shop policies that I don't respond to requests for free items, regarless of the reason (charity, blog review, etc). I was so annoyed right now though, that I did reply with a fairly curt response. The thing is that i probably wouldn't have been so annoyed by it, but it was borderline imcomprehensible the grammar and punctuation was so appaulingly bad. I don't claim to be a master of the English language, but seriously, if you are going to ask for free stuff, at least pretend it's a legitimate business request and use capitalization.

Ok, rant over.

Wow, that is frustrating. If it were me and I wanted to rate you on my YouTube channel, I'd buy a sampler or ask to buy one. It is so brazen to ask for free stuff. I wouldn't walk into a grocery store and ask for a free box of crackers for my YouTube channel. ;)

Re: Requests for Free stuff

Yesterday I found a thread of someone asking for 20 free hair accesories for a blog mention (from any shop - not 1 pc from 20 shops) . Their facebook has 56 followers. The thread got so rude and funny it was removed (I just looked for it to post the link). So I guess there are many people looking for free stuff, LOL!

Re: Requests for Free stuff

when i first opened my shop i got a lot of those and I did give to several and of course never heard back from them. I love when they get real specific about the pieces and how they want them customized.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I get that quite a bit too. Although some blogs that contact me - i'm happy to offer something for a review since they have a ton of followers, and fit my style. But others... I start to get annoyed when people ask for free stuff and they have very little followers. Sometimes I feel these people think they're ENTITLED to free stuff just because they have a blog, youtube channel, etc. I just stop responding when they start getting pushy and rude :-)

Another thing that is bothering me lately, is I get a lot of requests for trades (more requests for trades than actual sales LOL). And a lot of people that are asking for trades actually have tons of sales. Now if I was super successful, and had a bunch of product to give away, I would - but I need my items for heartsy and upcoming conventions.

I politely say that I don't do trades and then give a discount code :-) but it doesn't work. lol. I feel like other etsy artists have jumped on the "i don't want to pay for anything" bandwagon.

I used to get a lot of trade requests but haven't in a while. I consider myself lucky.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I do a lot of trading and I ask shops I love all the time! I try to be very friendly about it though and make it clear that it's OK if you say no. I know when I ask out of the blue that my chances of making a trade are slim but I've actually made some really great trades this way.

I don't like it when a start up blog or youtube whatever asks for free items. Wasn't there a time when bloggers would rate the items they actually purchased? I have had several requests from little blogs without any real following and I've offered coupon codes but all they want is free stuff. If it were a blog with a large following I would consider it but it still feels like if they are interested enough in my product the least they could do is buy the item they intend to review.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

@flirtbuttons jealous of you!

@Studio66 lol i'm not brave enough to classify shops as "horrible". A lot of trade requests come from shops with not so good stuff. Others have nice stuff, just not my style.

@Pugs2Persians, I'm glad it works out with you. I have traded in the past with shops I've liked, so I'm for trading - with the right shops ;)

Re: Requests for Free stuff

That's the key. Making a match where everyone is happy with the swap is a rare event but certainly worth it when it happens :)

Re: Requests for Free stuff

Like Flirt, when I first opened I actually did agree to do a couple blog giveaways. I didn't know any better but was just so flattered to be asked- hahaha. It was fine - they were very nice people and I did get some traffic and actually got one sale about a year later from one of them. Here's the freaky thing- the giveaways were won by the same person! These were two different blogs- one from a middle aged woman in the Northwest the other from a young mom in Ohio. It was seriously weird. The person who won had to have thought so too, though she never contacted me.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I find that the people who enter those giveaways often enter them in bulk. I had a similar situation happen with a woman who won 2 of my giveaways from 2 different places. For a while there I tried my hand at winning some giveaways and I kept seeing the same entrants over and over. It's nuts but it just goes to show they're in it for the free stuff. Not because they're interested in your products.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I have had a few good trades, but for the most part it is usually shops that I don't like or need their items.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

i don't capitalize, as an artist for aesthetic reasons.

i don't usually capitalize on business things either.

if someone has a problem with business people who don't capitalize, i guess i'm one to steer clear of. i am professional.

now, what she did with asking you for free stuff was tacky and inappropriate.

I've never been contacted about a swap.. although I have contacted people in local classifieds for swaps and did trade a painting for a trampoline once.. and for a giant inflatable waterslide another time :D I love being able to paint for an awesome toy for the kids!

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I see nothing wrong with trading at all. Two people are agreeing to exchange their items that they like. Both are benefiting. If you don't want to, say no... If you do, it could be a great opportunity to get a unique handmade item. It isn't always about wanting something for nothing. You are actually paying for the item by taking your time to make the item the other person wants. What's wrong with that? :)

Re: Requests for Free stuff

wire, it does not sound like it was a trade request.
it was a request for product with nothing exchanged except the possibility of a review.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I'm ok with this as well - there are good opportunities for exposure and marketing of your shop everywhere. You have to realize that if you have a shop, you are now a business owner. People are going to contact you for a variety of reasons. I think that some of the people approaching me - obviously trying to make money as well or get free items, may have a way to truly help my shop. They are not all going to be good and I say no to most requests, but once in awhile, I think - "hey, they might be on to something here that will benefit me". I have a cousin that owns an actual business - weddings/events... she gets calls/visits ALL the time from people who want to HELP her with new products, supplies, marketing... you name it!... most she turns down, some she works with - as a business owner, you are going to encounter these requests. If she let all those people annoy her or even upset her - she wouldn't end up with the best customer service and attitude..... I wouldn't be so quick to turn them all down.... Heartsy may be something we are seeking... but they are benefiting from our hard work and in return, we get more exposure. It's a trade off. I'd certainly be cautious with who I decide to work with but we are all here because we want to sell our items and make money, right? :) .... what's wrong with another person who has a unique service to offer, to want to make money?? or get something for that service? :) There are a lot of people getting VERY creative out there who are trying to make money - what do you think Heartsy is, or Crafy Attic, QU.... ETSY even !!! :) lol They've just expanded and perfected their ideas.... some of these girls trying to promote your items could be on to something... and end up as big business some day - who knows. But I certainly would not be offended at the request. You don't have to take your time to respond if it is not for you.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

I tell everyone if you are going to do reviews etc make sure they have thousands of followers that you can clearly see. Otherwise they wont bring you traffic and it's not worth it.

Re: Requests for Free stuff

trading is not the problem... I wasn't trying to bash it at all :-)

my problem is with the repeated trade requests where they don't leave you alone if you say no, and are quite rude -from my experience. This has not been the case with every person who has contacted me (many are really nice and polite), but quite a few have been down right rude.

it's like people are lacking etiquette these days.
