Real or Not?

Hi, I just opened my new ETSY store and I would absolutely love it if someone would enter my shope and buy something!

I think the main issue i should tackle first is how to I get people in without having to pay the $7 promotion service ETSY has. PLEASE HELP!

Second, I'm wondering if I should start creating my jewelry out of finer material, such as sterling silver, gold filled, semi precious gemstones. I was concerned no one would buy from me if my asking price was too high - the main reason for using cheaper materials! PLEASE HELP!!

Re: Real or Not?

@TheTwistedWire1978 - welcome. i was on etsy for almost 9 months before receiving my first sale. so it does take time. A few things you might want to consider:

*change your avatar - either a picture of yourself, your business logo, or a pic of one your items. I see the generic avatar as a buyer & therefore wouldn't click on it.

*you are given 14 tags and five spots for photos - use them all. it helps belive me.

* you shop announcement should be filled with key word to help with searching. Its not pretty but helps.

*most importantly - there are currently over 1 million listings for jewelry on etsy!! chances are that the listings you created in Feb are long buried & won't come up in a search. So keep listing new items or renewing your items EVERYDAY!!

*advertise outside of etsy: facebook, twitter, blogs etc...

*Do not go with cheaper materials unless thats what you want to do. remember your items represent you and you business. So use materials that you like and you stand by.

***other than that.... create, create, create.... when sales are slow do what you love.... create. The new listings will draw people to your shop in no time.

♥Thanks for letting me ramble. I am by no means an expert. These are just things that have helped me :-)

Re: Real or Not?

I second everything said above.

We opened back in 09' and went 4 mo. with no sales until we figured we had to do something different. I was very serious about making this work so we closed so to speak while we researched the ins and outs of selling here or anywhere online. Learned alot about SEO and how it works, learned how to take pictures(spent weeks on this), spent many hours in the forums looking for tips, advice, success stories and what they did, read many articles from Etsy success and reinvented our products, made sure that we had well over 100 items to fill our shop( I know this may be unrealistic for some, but I seriously did nothing else for 8 mo) Opened again in late Oct. 10'' and have done pretty good for just starting out....I am very happy with it. I still get excited over each sale and am always interested in what the buyer has picked.

You'll need patience, be willing to adjust as needed, willing to put in many, many hours of researching....my husband has become an SEO wiz :)

I don't know much about the jewelry supply prices or making it, but IF I was making jewelry I would use the finer materials. The cost for our supplies don't break the bank like some do, but we use the best for our particular products. I would assume this is important for those shopping for jewelry. Jewelry is very saturated though from what I hear. Think of unique ideas that one could not find elsewhere....even here...something that will make you stand out, that people will recognize and say hey that is .Thetwistedwire1978.

Stay patient, and like they said create, create and create:)

Re: Real or Not?

I am sorry:( SEO is "Search Engine Optimisation"

I cannot explain it much as it just goes right over my head for the most part, thank goodness for my husband, but if you do a search SEO under "business" in the forums there is endless reading and teaching....here are some to start you out...

Re: Real or Not?

I totally agree with myhobbyshop...

i've tried showcasing my items a couple of times and haven't really seen a reasonable increase in sales from it.
i definitely believe that learning to take good pictures has a lot to do with it as well. and trust me... it takes time. (i'm still working on it!!)
i use picnik.com for photo editing. it's wonderful!!

as for using the expensive stuff or the not so expensive stuff, i do a little of both and find that it opens up my store to a wider variety of customers...

hang in there!!

Re: Real or Not?

you definitely need to add more product. People like to have choices and if you only have 4 things to choose from, that's not much. Imagine going into a boutique and only having 4 things to choose from.

And promote, and patience.

Good luck...

Re: Real or Not?

and a little of both, as nursechic72 mentioned. some people will prefer something less expensive. others will want to spend more for the real thing.
