Listing and Shop Reviews

Hello again,

I have decided to start a thread where we can post and review each others listings and Shop. I think our shared knowledge and effort could help everyone out on staying relevant, accurate and who knows maybe someone with catch something we forgot to include. Anyhow, feel free to post up to two listings or a link to your overall shop and this will be the thread where any member can take a look and give some feedback. Just a note, if you are going to post please be willing to review as well.

Thanks!

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Hi Sarah, I really liked looking at your shop and the items you have on there. As far as any advice/reviewing could go, you seem to be a lot further along than myself so I don't know exactly what to say other than everything looks pretty good and you have sales which is always a good indicator. The only thing I could recommend working on is creating some photo variations of your items, I'd throw a couple in on a different background or put in a setting like environment to go along with the white backdrop ones. I have been working on that myself and I got lucky in the sense that my roommate is a professional travel and tv commercial photographer and he gave me some similar advice so I guess that's really all I can pass along myself, but great stuff!

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Hi Crystal,
Thanks for the feedback on my shop, I took a look at yours also and thought I'd add just a few things if you don't mind. A lot of what I am going to say are things other shop owners have suggested to me so far and it has helped out with views and getting noticed. And you have great stuff that deserves to be seen. I'd put an about section on your shops home page and tell them a little about yourself and what inspired you to start making jewelry and maybe a bit on how you make it etc. Offering shipping outside the US will greatly boost your customer base and it isn't as expensive as you'd think, most people tend to charge a few bucks for international shipping on things like jewelry maybe up to like $10.00 - that's the max I have seen so far and you can always charge a bit more for your item to help cover the shipping cost. (I personally offer free shipping to the US and Canada and charge $3.00 for everywhere else). And when you are tagging your products be a bit more diverse and use two word tags like red bracelet or maybe the style like bohemian jewelry, I paid for the search ad things, not so much for the ads but so it would show me what words were typed when searched most offen and the word bohemian came up like 3,400 times compared with earring which came up 249 times. And try to list more items also if you can, I have been trying to put more up myself also. anyhow, great work, keep it up!

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Hey Nicholas,

Thanks for the critique!

Your shop has not been opened that long and it can definitely take time to make the first sale so don't get discouraged.

I have a few comments. The firsts is while I like the background variation on your photos I would definitely try to have them be a little closer up. Overall they are good photos though.

Second, make sure you really get the most out of your tags when you're describing your items. Think shape, size, fit, color, texture, materials first and foremost.

This for instance:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/115611605/bohemian-leather-gemstone-necklace-with?ref=v1_other_1

There's not much in the way of color in your tags, purple, fuchsia, metallic are all words you could use to describe your beads. Also around the holidays you should think about using words like "gift" or "holiday gift". If you have jewelry with red and green you can do "Christmas gift" or "Christmas necklace". People do a lot of color searches. More close up pics will also increase your odds of getting put in a treasury. Stalk the front page treasury photos, regardless of the varying backgrounds they all tend to be very bright and clear, and often times close up.

You might also want to select four "featured" items to list at the top of your page (which you can do under listings".

Lastly, try to list at least 50 items if you can. The more listings you have the more likely it is you will turn up in a search.

Hope that helps!

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Hi Guys,
I am new to this team and just reading this thread makes me want to do a better job on my listings, what a great effect. Are you guys right clicking on listings and "viewing page source" too see what tags people used? They are a little more than half way down the source page. Brilliant way to do it, I didn't think of that until reading this post.
I know I have a lot of room for improvement, especially with photos. If you guys have any advice I would definitely put it to good use. Thank you so much! Tommy

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Hey Tommy,

You have great items. I would suggest photographing your items in natural lighting, either outdoors or near a bright window, and also getting them a little closer up if you can so people can see them more clearly when they show up in searches. Also, while showing what rings and things look like on helps give the buyer a better idea of how something might fit, I would maybe not use that as your thumbnail/main pic for your listings because in a search option a lot of times it just looks like you're looking at someone's hand.

I would maybe also try and create a banner for the top of your page. There's a whole ton of forums and useful info on easy ways to make banners here: http://www.etsy.com/forums_search.php?search_query=banners&search_type=title&ref=forums_search

I also suggest using something with universal size to show how big something is, like photographing it next to quarter.

Otherwise things look pretty good and you seem to be making good use of your tags.

Best of luck!

-Sarah

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Do you think it would be worth it to invest in one of those photo box thingies? I have a tripod but I mainly post after work and its usually dark out by then. Also should I be using the "Macro" feature on my close ups? I am not sure if that feature really makes a difference. Thanks for all your help and input, Tommy

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

If you're primarily going to photographing indoors at night then I'd definitely set up a photo box. Though you might want to look into making one before buying one, I know a lot of people who've said they made one. But either way, I think a photo box and a macro setting would definitely help.

Best of luck!

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

I also highly recommend the Etsy Sellers Handbook to everyone and am going to go back through it myself. It's cumbersome but worth it.

Also, asking for a shop critique every once in a while in the "Business topics" section of the main Etsy forums has helped me out a lot in the past.

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

I bought a light box, it should be here in a week, was only 10 bucks. It will be nice to not take pictures of things and using one of my shirts for the platform :) Thank you so much! Tommy

Re: Listing and Shop Reviews

Tommy,

Thank you so much! For joining etsy only a few months ago, your compliments mean a lot! I love your shop, you have a great variety! As far as your pictures you could use more of a natural lighting, but it is great how you have your hand in some of the photos to show how large the items are. Overall, great job! And again, thank you!
