Modeling Bracelets?

Up until recently, I was under the impression that buyers liked to see bracelets modeled to get a sense of how large the bracelet really is. But then I started seeing more and more posts about how people think modeled jewelry is "gross" because it's touching some one else's skin.

Do you model your bracelets? Why or why not?

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I only have one bracelet modeled in my shop and it's not a primary pic for the listing. I personally don't like it. I can see how buyers would feel that someone wore the bracelet previously.

Not everyone has a perfect "model" wrist so from time to time you see hairy arms or age spots that take away from their beautiful bracelets. I don't think that the buyer needs to see the bracelets modeled to understand how the bracelet looks or the work that went into it.

BTW you have a lovely shop! :)

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I model my bracelets in some listings, but my bracelets are made to order, so no one ever gets the one they see in the pictures.

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

My bracelets are made to order as well, but I refuse to model them. Not because I actually think it's gross, I just hate how my arms look. lol.

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I find it hard to get a good looking picture when taking a pic of my own arm..my hand always looks awkward! I have some photos for my custom bracelet listings that are pictured on my arm but for the most part I just have the bracelet by itself.

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I think it's important to show a size reference.

Several times I saw amazing macro pictures of items (necklaces mainly), clicked to see more and then was suprised to see it in a model, because it looked tiny!

Even if you state the dimensions in the description, in my opinion, you should add a picture of the item in some kind of context, maybe not being used but add something to the picture so that the buyer can compare and get an idea of how big or small the product is.

Anyway, I've seen tons of shops that sell a lot and show their items isolated so it's obviously not a requirement...

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

Initially I listed some bracelets with modeled pics, and some without, and I started to notice that my items that were modeled had more orders and views, so I shifted to modeling all of them. (I include non-modeled pics as well in the listing.) I also state that all my items are washed prior to shipping (obviously *after* modeling them), so I think that answers any questions/concerns about that.

I'm not sure about the unsightly/hairy arm situation, but I do try to make sure that the photos are flattering. If there's a kink in the bracelet or a piece of lint in the background, I take another shot. (Some of my older listings were AWFUL in this regard, but I'm getting better at controlling the photography "set".) My photos still need quite a bit of improvement - and I seriously need to learn how to use editing software...once I download a free one - but I do think that I've had an upward trend since I added the modeled pics.

That said, I think I personally am more attracted to the non-modeled bracelet (and other jewelry) pics when I'm shopping. Personal preference, and it has nothing to do with any perceived "ick factor" about the jewelry, since I always presume that my item will be cleaned and/or a different item from the one in the photo.

I'm curious if any clothing or hat vendors have this issue, too? I certainly wouldn't want the same undergarments that were modeled, if I were purchasing that sort of item ;), but I don't think I'd be weirded out by a washed t-shirt. When I go to a commercial store, I don't know how many people tried something on, or what sort of packaging or storage it was in, so I always wash things first.

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I used to have pictures of my left hand and the bracelet on it (so that I could take pictures by my right hand :) ), but now I have my rocky backrounds and I am fine with those. I kept some of the old pictures and used them in a last photo, but not all of the listings have it and I dont think it matters that much

Re: Modeling Bracelets?

I like seeing items in a model but I find it hard to take photos of myself wearing the bracelet. After reading this thread I added a photo of me modeling one of my bracelets, I'll see how it goes! :)
