Re: Visibility on Google search

Your traffic from Google is probably coming from Google AdWords via Etsy. I did pay for a campaign and found out that Etsy itself pays for Google AdWords and I was competing against myself! Everytime someone did a search for my keywords the stupid Etsy ad also came up!

In the long run it wasn't financially worth it to me.

Otherwise the only way to rank high on Google (other than paying for a campaign) is to have content - such as a blog.

Re: Visibility on Google search

Right, Google is looking for content - meaning articles, over listings of items for sale.

I'd suggest checking out Storewoot. I'm having good luck with getting views from Pinterest. I do think you need to choose carefully what items you pick. Right now I pick one item every Monday, that I think has broad visual appeal, to post to my account. If you have an item that continuously sells in your shop (not a OOAK but something you can replace and keep selling), I think that is a good item to promote via storewoot. IMO

Re: Visibility on Google search

You can start a free blog with Wordpress (it doesn't have a website url but you can later move it to your website domain if you want).

Agree completely with Rebecca.

It's difficult to compete with bigger companies with deeper pockets unless you have truly great content. Good content also helps with your social media popularity.

Also, Etsy already pays for product listing ads with Google Shopping so it doesn't make sense for you to pay again.

Re: Visibility on Google search

Okay, just read this on a Facebook post by some Etsians... What do the SEO'ers out there think?

I checked a couple of your listings and I found that you're doing something that will automatically cause search engines to reject your listings - you are using inch marks ( " ) and slash marks ( / ) to delineate measurements. This is a huge SEO no-no. Any punctuation mark other than a comma or a period will void the "readability" of your listings in search crawls. Quarter inch needs to read .25 and half inch .5 and three quarters inc .75. For increments of eighths, spell it out - "three eighths of an inch", etc. Never use any punctuation beyond a period or comma. That includes not using contractions - "do not", not "don't". It will look weird at first, and awkward, but beats the heck out of drastically lowered visibility.

Re: Visibility on Google search

WOW! This information about the use of 'inch marks' is new to me! And, (gulp...) I have A LOT of work to do! OMG!!
I thank you for it, though, Donna.
Practically all of my listing for my photo greeting cards state 5" X 7" OR the photos attached being 4" x 6".
I work on my shop constantly and am not happy to learn that I probably have to go in and edit around 140 items. Oh! The things NO ONE tells us!!
@ Donna - thank you again...
I'm going to make the changes and will hope to get more views AND, more importantly, SALES.
Deep breath here...

Re: Visibility on Google search

I don't buy that. Sorry :(

I think when it comes to SEO people work themselves into a frenzy thinking there is a magic formula. The reality is that Google (and Etsy will follow), is constantly re-working how and what they search for.

I don't mean people here - but people in general think there is always a way to get around the rules or that they have to get it exactly right etc.. The real-reality is that Etsy/Google is going to judge by content.

1.) use ALL the photo slots you have.

2.) each photo name should include the keywords you will be using as well as your shop name

3.) Give detailed descriptions in your text and repeat (naturally) the keywords and phrases that give high results that you will be using (I personally think this is where people fail - they are not using the RIGHT KEYWORDS).

4.) Give options and customs to each order (this apparently does increase your listing - the more info, photos, options ups the listing).

5.) BE ACCURATE - don't try to scam/spam with links that are not true (such as using another shops name in your keywords). In the long run this will work against you.

When I see people posting on the general forums that they can't get noticed and I look at their shop, it's obvious: not enough listings, not enough descriptions, using the wrong keywords, nothing in the about/policies that makes a buyer connect.

Re: Visibility on Google search

I posted the note because I wanted to see what you all thought, not that it was the gospel truth. I really hope it's not - I am not changing my 700+ listings, that's for sure!

Re: Visibility on Google search

LOL! Well it wasn't really a criticism - I think you can always post some with the decimals and some with the " mark and see what happens. :)

Re: Visibility on Google search

Well, as you can tell...you got my attention. And, just for the heck of it, I posted the question to another team whose captain is really an expert on this stuff. We'll see what she says.
Thank you...your heart is in the right place...that's for sure.

Re: Visibility on Google search

P.S. : The name of the Team to which I referred is Etsy Relevancy SEO (or? CEO?) and Stats...anyway; you'll find it.
Cindy has been at this a long time and she really knows her stuff. You'll see my post over there and her response and she backs up her information (just like Sahiba does) with links so you can check things out for yourself.
I'm breathing a big sigh of relief. I may go ahead and change some of my listings; I do that all the time anyway...but, at least now, I don't feel 'panicked'.
