Rereading parts of this wonderful article, it does seem like doing Treasuries may be more productive than belonging to the Teams which just give you lots of likes--since Treasuries may result in my items getting featured in their Treasuries. Am I right?

@Ann, yes, so far I have been unable to find much advantage of getting likes form teams.

As for treasuries, they do seem to be more helpful, but since Etsy does not actually release the formula that it uses to calculate relevancy, it's difficult to say exactly how much weight clicks through treasuries carry.

I am assuming that the "keywords" this article mentions are words you would include in the description of the item (because "tags" are limited in length, so you can't do a long phrase there).

Rather than try to work a bunch of keywords or keyphrases into the description in narrative form, which is time-consuming and awkward, I am wondering if it is of any benefit to simply list a bunch of keywords/keyphrases at the end of the description. I think that would still cause the item to come up in a search using that keyword/keyphrase, yes?

Hi Scotti,

Etsy does not read your description for search purposes - it only looks at your titles and tags. This is why you need to fit your keywords into titles / tags to be relevant for Etsy search. Adding them to your description will not help.

Also, while Google will read your description, Google's new algorithm is surprisingly smart and can tell the difference between a sentence in a description and a list of keywords.

Adding a bunch of keywords at the bottom may actually hurt your Google ranking. This is especially true for keyword stuffing i.e. repeating a word multiple times e.g. acrylic art, acrylic painting, acrylic modern figure, acrylic modern art etc. Google regards this as spam.

Okay, that's kind of what I thought. But I still don't understand how we are supposed to follow the advice in the article with the strict limitations on the length of tags. For example, under the discussion of tags, the article mentions "boho turquoise necklace" and "necklace boho turquoise" -- yet neither of those could be used as tags. They have more than 20 characters (spaces count as characters). Most of the distinctive key phrases I come up with for my items are too long to be used as tags. Even some of the simple two-word key phrases I would like to use are too long. Anyway, I'm still trying to work through this. :)

@Scotti - In your example, you would use "boho turquoise" as one tag and "turquoise necklace" as another. Just split up your phrases to fit the tag space limitation. It's good to think about keyword phrases as an adjective and a noun - things people may search for.

This is helpful and there are so many tips I will not remember. I will need to bookmark this so I can go back and reread it...over and over again. I struggle with getting the perfect SEO balance for both ETSY and google. How important is it to focus on google if you have an ETSY shop?
