Mentors Month - Week 2: SEO, Tags and Titles, Getting Found

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are doing fine!

The topic of the second week is „SEO, Tags and Titles, Getting Found“.

Search terms are key to getting your items found in Search
and Browse on Etsy. Without descriptive phrases items won’t
do well in search resulting in poor traffic on the site. Check

It’s important to have English listings if you want to be found
by the full Etsy audience. If your mentees shop does not have
any English listings, consider helping them translate a few.
This will give them a lot more visibility on the site! And
always keep in mind that you can only get found by buyers
for which countries you have a shipping rate listed.

Tip for Mentors:

Look at all your Mentee’s listings and make sure the most
important and most searched-for phrase is near the front of
each item’s title.

Tip for Mentees:

Look at your mentor's shop and at the other successful shops on etsy, who sell similar items and study their tags and titles.

We can discuss unclear points in this thread and if you know some tips, tricks and useful links – PLEASE SHARE!

Each group can decide what improvements they are going to make in their shops during this week (mentors can help mentees to decide what is more important – if they cannot decide themselves, and also help each other) at the end of the week each member of the group can give each other a small review on the improvements that were made.

But of course each group should decide itself what way of working together it prefers.


PLUS: Those team members who are not taking part in the Mentors Month are also welcome to study the resources mentioned above and share their knowledge and opinion with others!

Mirta: It is interesting - Did they tell that why are phrases better than single keywords as tags? Is it for Etsy's search algorithms or someting else?

I like your shop's vertical arrangement :)

Andrea yes they said it's because of Etsy's search algorithms. I still use some single words, I mix it up.

Hey everyone,
just a little bit of help, because there was the question about the difference between tags and titles. i just wanted to add to that, that titles are THE key point to be found on searches on google. Tags are "only" useful for searches on etsy. Maybe some of you don't know, but you activate the preview of how your titles and the first sentences of your listings will appear on google. It's really helpful to choose carefully which words you want to put first in your listings.

Plus, concerning the titles, descriptives phrases are better, maybe not for SEO (I'm not sure about that, as the search engine only calculate results using keywords) but because it's much more pleasing for the visitor and potential buyer.
That's the trick with an online shop : combine keywords to be found on the gigantic internet but still give a human sense of shopping to the customers.

If it helps Lucia and Marijka, I would also add in 'cottage decor' or 'pot pourri' as that's what your little heart suggests to me, regardless of whether or not it has pot pourri in it!

Now, I would love help on probably all of my listings (!), but there is one that is bugging me the most. And it's my Floyd/ Flora customised monsters. I have always seen them as my flagship monsters and they're always popular with friends and family, but I have never sold one to a stranger through Etsy.

I had assumed it was the price putting people off, but as they take me so long to make, I can't really change that. In fact, strictly they should be more. So I would love all opinions please. Possibly the key info is buried so would be interesting to see what you all consider to be the USPs of these monsters and if that matches up with what I think they are!

I'm posting first the customised listing which shows three examples of the monsters photographed together. But if you look on my site, you'll see those three listed separately as well for slightly less money as they're already made and therefore not customisable. Curious which photos work best?

Is the description too long? Bad photographs? Not engaging photographs? Simply a design issue? I seem to get a lot of viewings on my site so I THINK my SEO is ok, but the sales aren't matching up, so something's wrong.....

After reading I realized that we look for right words or poetic titles for our shops. But we as buyer what are the words which we use ? For I have just become aware that those are not the ones that I use in my tags. I have some more of work to modify everything ;)

Juliette: Maybe you should offer some clear colour options - "chose any colour" is too abstract. Sometimes I have customers, who cannot chose from 6 colours I offer :))) I also think that your description is too long and people do not really read long texts. But your monsters are lovely! And I also like the pictures - so this is not the reason I am sure :)

Mir gefällt das Profilbild von Nadine auch sehr gut.
Nun habe ich mal eine Frage in die Runde. Ich habe gerade viel an meinem Shop gearbeitet, auch ein neues Banner und ein neues Profilbild. Hier sehe ich jedoch keine Fotos als Profilbild. Mir wurde immer gesagt, dass der Kunde auf dem Profilbild immer gerne die Person sieht, die dahinter steckt. Ist das falsch????

Ich denke, das ist richtig! Und wenn Sie die "Team Members" Liste anschauen sehen Sie viele Profilbilder mit Fotos, wo die Personen zu sehen sind. Mir gefallt ganz gut Ihres neues Profilbild und Banner :)

Thanks Maryia, I had thought offering a fully customised monster might get more interest, but I guess it's all about the one(s) in the photos that piqué a cuatomer's interest. And I can always say at the bottom that I'm happy to do custom versions? Yes, fully aware I waffle....

Caro and Zolie, yes my big monsters do come with adoption scrolls, is that what you mean? Or do you think birth certificates would be better?
