Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

What a great idea! I don't have anything red except a Christmas shirt, but I will be wearing red in my mind all day :o)

My 7th and 9th grade kids remarked yesterday, "Lots of people at our school carry knives". What???? We live in a pretty nice neighborhood. The only way we can afford to live here is to rent a townhouse, but consider it "worth it" because they have such a great school system here. I don't know why these kids think they can do that sort of thing. All it takes is for one of them to get mad and pull out that knife. So sad.

Margaretta High School sent us a notice to remember the students and families, they are in our prayers, so sad. What causes a child to get this full of hate?

what a great way to honor everyone involved. i heard this morning that one boy didn't make it. it's so sad. yesterday two school girls about 11 years old got in a fight over a boy. one of the girls died due to blunt force trauma. they're charging the other girl with murder. i am so glad my daughter is grown. i would be so scared to send my child to school nowadays.

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

It is very common. I live in California now, I pulled my son out of the so called "good school" in the area, upscale neighborhood....lots of drugs, lots of weapons, lots of oblivious parents and uncaring teachers.

I am so sorry but half of these people have NO idea what is going on with their kids, they don't talk, they don't take time and their kids fall thorugh the cracks with teachers and a society that just looks the other way when there are issues..and then something like this happens,. My heart breaks for all involved. And it really pisses me off.

Our news said the kid was bullied. He was probably just tired of it. I can relate. Sad but honest.

I agree, Kym.

My niece lives in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere in central Texas and her son (my great nephew) had a boy pull a knife on him at a school dance (when he was 12) and try to stab him in the leg. I would have considered their area to be one of the safest places in the world to live.

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

Oh, it's so sad about the school shooting.. I feel bad for everyone involved. I thought that was just a bad dream (I sleep with the talk radio on, and I didn't know if I dreamed about hearing it or not).

Kids are really, really, REALLY horrible... I'm absolutely disgusted at what is morally acceptable nowadays. Drugs in a school are talked about like a normal weekend activity, I pulled my kid out for home school because I was just--- Shocked. Really, shocked pretty much sums it up. Even walking through, the kids looked horrible, there was once a day when you had to be married with three kids before you saw that much skin!!! The teachers didn't care, they actually were on a constant supply of alcohol, and the assistant principal even talked about "Spiking" the soda in the teacher lounge. When I talked to my sons teacher you could smell it on her breath, and she looked so spacey...

This is not a bad school, this was one of the best public schools in the state, it even received some national recognition. It's not the schools as much as it's what is morally acceptable, just entirely okay.

But, when kids are raised with people like Lady Gaga, Eminem, and the worst one of the bunch coming up, "Nicki Minaj", what more can you expect?

The moral decline of the world, sad, but true.

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

How sad. I lived and was teaching in Colorado during Columbine. I just don't understand why kids would do this to other kids?

About knives it was common in my high school, rural Colorado, for the boys to carry knives. It actually wasn't against the school rules. As long as the knife blade was shorter than the palm of your hand it was okay. We never had any problems when I was a student or teaching. As a student, (early 1990's) kids actually had shot guns in their pick ups so they could go dove hunting during lunch hour.

Dewey - my friend home schools her kids, and she has a pin on Pinterest that says, "I home school because I have seen the Village, and I don't want them raising my child." :-)

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

I heard about this last night. the thread on one of my goth forums is going crazy with gun control debate *shakes head sadly* it's not about the guns

I was involved in a shooting in 96 kid shot at the school bus, and hit me.

If i had turned my head a little bit either way, I would either be dead or blind in my left eye.

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

Please keep something in mind....the kids are NOT horrible, they are crying out! They are just kids, poorly raised. It is not just the parents fault either.

When I was a kid, neighbors cared, teachers cared, even the crossing guard cared. The community really did raise the child. Kids were accountable for their actions and I hate to say this but parents, adults had CONTROL of their kids. They could discipline without fear of the state taking their kid, or getting sued by another parent. Parents were home after school, or the kid went to a neighbor or relative...kids were raised by real people, not tech. It is sad that kids are left to their own devices because nobody notices they are being bullied, harrassed, depressed, unable to cope with the enormous pressures that come with growing up today. I have told my husband a thousand times, If I had not been there...who knows what would have become of my kids....they and some of their friends went through some tough things...,and thank goodness someone was there to intervene.

This is not a commentary on working parents either..some have no choice, and that is where the community is SUPPOSED to come in to aid in the rearing of that child.

IMO...we should all be ashamed of ourselves as a society.

Only if you trust the village!

Miss Kym- what you sataed is why we chose to move back to small town USA. We live across the street from my daughter's teacher, our neighbor kids come over to play without orgainizing a "play date". The kids here play outside without concern. We know our neighbors, can call on them anytime of the day for help. We give up all the luxuries of the city to live here, but have done it for our kids. We hope our girls won't have to "grow up too fast". Can bad things happen here? Of course they can happen anywhere. But atleast here we (my husband and inlaws) know every kids parents and even their gandparents. It sure puts a mom's mind at ease when you know the parents.

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

It does Steph! My heart truly breaks for these kids...even the ones doing the shooting and bullying because they are crying out for help, to be noitced! Something has gone very wrong in their life and nobody cares. I even had a teacher tell my kid "I don't care if you guys pass, fail, come to class or not...I am here to collect a paycheck so do whatever you want"....and that is the clean version. My son had a substitute teacher once, she had been in the army...she spent the class showing the students how to take apart and clean a weapon...how to hold it, load it, etc. I was beyond pissed! I called the school, the board...nothing was done! NOTHING!!! I could go on and on...really....

I know a kid right now who is in Juvie....he was acting out...smoking pot and violated probation which he was on because he pulled a knife on a kid...(a gang member) who was threatening him. His brother just died, his mom a single mom...rather than getting him help...leading him in the right direction, getting him grief counseling, they lock him up. He is 16. How pissed at the world will he be when he gets out?

Re: Wearing RED today for support of CHARDON high school--please!

I guess it was easier for me in a sense becaue I ran a large home daycare for 22 years. I knew my kid friends...I picked them when they were young. I networked with other parents...still do and my baby is now 17. I try to get to know their friends. They hang out at my house, eat my food which I can't afford, I drive them around....good, bad, ugly....I know the kids, their parents, habits! My kids are far from perfect...but when they are sad, depressed, stressed....whatever, I try to talk to them, intervene. Read their facebooks, check their text messages...invade their privacy...for their own good. Their friends all know that I am "that mom" they can call in the middle of the night or show up at the house and sleep on the sofa, the mom that will get up at 2am to pick them up if they are stranded, or make them a sandwich and call their mom if they run away from home. I am not perfect, sometimes I question my own parenting...but somebody has to care. Maybe they will grow up to be "that parent"...hopefully they will remember the crazy lady that did that for them, or their parent would do it for my kid.
