Too sensitive?

Perhaps sensitive isn't the correct word. I have a facebook page that I use to share pictures of works in progress and newly listed items. I have found it a great tool to connect with those people involved in Ren Faires. Of course I have plenty of followers who aren't involved in the Reenactment crowd but who just like jewelry. But recently there has been a woman who is sharing my pictures on her on FB page (something I generally have no problem with) and commenting on how is she is going to make (copy) the piece in the picture. I know copyright on jewelry design is a tricky thing and I'm not claiming that anything I make would be eligible to be covered by copyright, but isn't it a bit cheeky to come right out and say "oh I'm going to copy this". I don't know it just strikes me as slightly rude. Copy the design, fine, I can't really stop you but have more class than to advertise to me that that is what you are planning to do. Am I out of line in my thinking here?

Re: Too sensitive?

Not at all. She's out of line. Copyright doesn't cover "ideas" but there's no need to advertise that she's going to copy something. Your piece take skill ... they're gorgeous. I suspect she's going to try to make something similar and probably has no intention of setting up shop. But she's awfully silly to announce it.

So ... I'd say your feelings are peerfectly justified. (BTW .... have always loved the idea of Rennaisance Faires ... I saw some people jousting in full armor in Kapiolani Park ( Waikiki) a while back and I wanted to jump out of my car and join the fun ....)

Re: Too sensitive?

Yuck. I haven't come across that on facebook (although someone did use one of my meerkat pics as their avatar which was a bit weird) but I deleted my pinterest account out of disgust at seeing so many "I'm gonna copy this" boards.

Re: Too sensitive?

I am glad to know that I'm not out of line in feeling this way.

Nikki- I feel the same way and am bummed that there isn't a Renaissance Faire close to where I live but through FB at least I can connect with those who are able to participate.

Re: Too sensitive?

I don't think you're out of line at all. I'd say more, but this thread is public. Let's just say, "been there, done that". :)

I think it's just plain selfish, mean and rude!

Re: Too sensitive?

I would be annoyed too! I think I would post a comment about how anxious you are to see her finished work-lol! I think we all know how few actually successfully follow through on do it yourself projects, but its the gall of thinking and insinuating that its easy. Rude for sure!

Re: Too sensitive?

Most people have no idea when they say things that they are even hurting someone else. If they did they would have their page so no one could see them even saying that.

All of us at sometimes have said...Oh I can do that. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't. Those people that do are not who you are selling to anyways. However she in all her wisdom has brought you people to look at your store.

Remember it takes a grain of salt no matter how irritating to make a pearl.

Re: Too sensitive?

I would be annoyed. Maybe you could post a comment along the lines of "I hope you enjoy the hours involved in recreating MY original designs."

Re: Too sensitive?

I asked if she was a jewelry designer and she never replied. But at least she knows now that I know what she has been saying. I did think about saying something about wanting to see her finished work but decided against it for the moment at least. Thanks everyone for reassuring me that I'm not being overly sensitive.

Re: Too sensitive?

You can't help the copying, but someone calling it out is like writing graffiti on a wall of a police station, and they're watching you as you're doing it. lol
