I have no idea how to use a pattern.

And I have a project in my head that I need to get out.

I desire.... A COAT. (a Victorian take on the Shinsengumi haori. I'm a ho for Victorian fashion and the Bakumatsu, so why not put them together?) I have no knowledge of how to make clothing from scratch so I figured it best to find a pattern that I like and go from there.

Sizing, however... well I just don't understand it. And what's with all the tissue paper? HOW DO I USE THIS THING?

I have heard somewhere that your 'pattern' size is different than your regular size. I really would like to buy the correct pattern so any assistance would be appreciated.

Patterns are different than your regular size. Go by your measurements.

Also patterns give way too much for ease! Are you going to start your first pattern try with a coat?

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

Measure your bust, waist and hips. Then match up those sizes to the sizes on the back of the pattern package. :)

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

You will probably have different types of coats in the pattern - A, B, C. Find the letter for the one you want and find the instructions for that letter in the paper included (not the tissue). It will tell you which numbered pieces you need to cut out. Once you have them all cut out, then follow the directions. It should be step by step by the piece numbers. :)

@pixie- probably not since this project is something I really want and I don't want to discourage myself. Any suggestions on a good first pattern pattern?

@ Vibrant- that is a lot easier than I imagined. The last time I opened a pattern I got overwhelmed and said-- never. I can't do it.

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

I find dresses the easiest to make for starting out. I would try not to get one with a zipper though, because that alone will probably discourage you if you have never sewn before. :)

The tissue paper thing you put and pin on the fabric to cut the pattern out..

You ever sew before?

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

I sew plenty, just not clothes. The idea of trying to fit something on my body is a little intimidating. =P

Here is my tutorial on zippers without an invisible zipper foot:

A shift dress or skirt would be best to try first.

Wait for Savoy and the rest. They do human size clothes and will be able to help.

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

I would start your first project out of muslin. Its fairly inexpensive and easy to work with. Don't waste expensive fabric teaching yourself to sew. Start out with an easy sew pattern just so you can get the hang of it down.

With the tissue pattern there will be an instruction sheet. It will tell you which pieces to cut out for what item you will be sewing. Once you do that there will be a diagram of how you pin it to your fabric, where the fold should be, etc. The shaded pieces you see in the diagram are the "wrong side" of the pattern. Cut the pieces out the way it shoes you on the sheet. After you have all your pieces cut out, follow the directions on the insert for the item you are sewing.

If you try drafting the coat in muslin, make sure you make an allowance for the bulk of the fabric of you will make the jacket too tight. When you get the right fit down you can rip the seams and use the pieces of muslin as a guide for drawing your coat pattern. But I would start out with something like an aline dress or something else simple until you get the hang of adjusting patterns to size. If you have any questions feel free to convo me

Good luck and happy sewing :-)

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

Thank you so much for the tips! I can't wait to get started, though I should probably be finishing things like... the quilt(s) I'm making.. and inventory.. but hey. =P

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

I trace my patterns (the tissue paper) onto manila paper, makes life so much easier, because I always rip those things. xD

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

I don't know about starting with a coat...but it's your coat; so have at it! :-/

Patterns are easy; I just can't sew WITHOUT one!

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

@Buzz-- don't worry, I won't be starting with a coat, that's just the project that I'll be working to get to! I'd commission it, but.. I just feel like it would cost a lot of money with what I want done. Not to mention the pride of having made something yourself. We all know that feeling :D

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

It'll be fine; I only had rudimentary sewing before I started making clothes. You just need to know the basics and follow the directions. No biggie. Simplicity are the best; they are....simple. Vogue sucks. Bad. You know how to sew so you'll be fine.

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

Oh good. I didn't want to say don't start with a coat. But once you get the hang of it it is easy. I hate zippers though. Rather do a million button holes

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

You will do great when I started sewing I had no idea how to use a pattern. I made my own instead. To me it was less confusing. I forced myself to learn how to use them though. Crappy tissue and all lol

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

Hahaha I hate zippers too. I love the look of hooks and eyes, but they are SUCH a pain to clasp. I have several articles of clothing with them and while it looks great, every time I get dressed I'm hissing, "Why can't you be buttons? or Velcro?"

Re: I have no idea how to use a pattern.

Yep - start with something simpler. Coats are not the place to start. And depending on the pattern there is either more or less ease than you want. I always tell my customer to hold a tape around the particular area at the ease measurement amount and then tell me if they want more or less!

There is a product called Pattern - ease. Sort of like interfacing that you can trace onto ifyou want. Generally if you're only going to cut a pattern once...no worries to use the tissue.

And yep either muslin or a clearance fabric to start! Plus remember to ask questions as you go. We'll help!
