Anyone know anything about Ivory????

I found what I believe is an Ivory Hat pin holder.. It looks like it has grain to it and the inside has definite texture.. there are also a couple "dips" or "pits" in a couple areas.. I can take some photos and post if anyone needs to see to help...

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

How old is it? It's actually illegal to buy and sell ivory after a certain year...

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

what amy said, but you probably are ok

and it sounds like ivory, I used to have a chess set from it.

can't remember the year that the trade in ivory became illegal.

They still hunt elephants though, so i wonder what they do with the tusks??

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

Ivory was banned in 1989.
Hatpins were popular up until the 1920s, If your piece is ivory, then it's a pre-banned ivory piece and perfectly okay to sell.

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

you get used to that sort of daily corset wear.

you probably want to get it appraised, given the penalties on ivory, and the poaching trade currently.

what do they do with ivory, poached ivory?
they make stuff and forge its age and make it look legal, and sell it.
they will copy antique objects with modern ivory, in order to find ways to sell it.

I so want to make one of those dresses. Our historical society has a vintage pattern from that era and I am going to make a copy of it.

Steph from OneStitchDesigns says

••••••••••

They sell them; there's still a market for ill-gotten ivory that's, when you think about it, a tooth.

I watched a documentary on 90mins about truffles tonight. It was insane- people are actually killed over these underground mushrooms. Mafia involvement and all.

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

Dating it is also crucial because in the early 1900s there was an early form of "plastic" coming into use (ugh brain freeze can't remember the name now) that looks a LOT like ivory. Easy to confuse. Generally the ivory has a "colder" feel to it.

They do have some really good plastic stuff, but they can't do the crosshatching with it.

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

If it feels heavy for it's size in your hand, it's most certainly ivory.

It could very well be walrus ivory as well. They look very much the same, only walrus tusks are much smaller in diameter and in length. My guess is that it's walrus ivory.

That piece dates back to the very late 1800s to early 1900s. It was worked by hand, not turned on a machine lathe. You can see that by the slightly out of round shape.

The middle was cut, not bored, which means the center plug would have been left intact to be made into something else. The end of the plug was sliced off and used as a bottom for the cup. Chances are the glue that was used was made of elephant feet ; very much the same process as was used to make glue with cattle or horse's hooves.
Elmer's glue is still manufactured this way, that's why there's a cow on the label.

Re: Anyone know anything about Ivory????

Pre-World War Two, there were several plastics, Parkesine (1862), Xylonite (1869), Celluloid (1869), Galalith (1897 — aka Erinoid and French Bakelite), Bakelite (1909), Catalin (1927), and Lucite (1931 — aka Plexiglas or Perspex)
========================================================

Bakelite is quite heavy, but it has no grain.
