SEO Part One - Understanding Etsy Search & Search Engine Optimization

Hi Team!

This is the first part of an ongoing discussion that we're going to have on the subject of Etsy Seach, Keywords and SEO (search engine optimization).

I learned some new things about Etsy Search this Holiday season that I am excited to share with you all! However, there are some complexities that may take a bit of discussion. So I thought I would dedicate this thread to understanding how SEO on Etsy works.

For any who are not sure what SEO is all about here is a brief explanation:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” or “natural” search results on search engines and in this case Etsy's search engine (used by shoppers to find items to purchase).

SEO is a process that involves strategies, techniques and tactics to increase the visibility of our listings by obtaining a high-ranking placement in search results...ie the first few pages!

For example: A buyer types pink baby hat and if you sell a pink baby hat you want that buyer to see your hat but there are likely thousands of pink baby hats, 250 pages worth and not everyone is not going to be on the first few pages of results! So how do YOU get on page ONE?

THAT is the question we will be working on answering!

FIRST, we need to better understand how Etsy Search Engine Works...how does it determine which listings are more relevant to a shopper search and decide which listings should rank higher than others. This process is accomplished by using what is called a 'Search Algorithm', a computer term for a way of finding an item with specified properties among a collection of items.

Etsy's Search Engine compares words that Shoppers used to search for products with the words that we Sellers use to TITLE and TAG our Products...along with other criteria like recentcy, and what etsy is calling 'listing quality' more on that later!

How Exactly Etsy's Search Algorithm works is mostly secret but they do give us some clues. Take your time to read through these two article on Etsy's Search:

1. https://www.etsy.com/teams/7716/announcements/discuss/17024759/
2. https://www.etsy.com/help/article/34234144469

However don't let the complexity of it all overwhelm you! We don't have to be computer wizards in order to win at SEO. We just have be better than others!

For our purposes here are the 3 points of Etsy's SEO that we'll focus on:

- 1. Relevance of titles and tags
- 2. Listing quality
- 3. Recency

What I learned this Christmas season challenged some ideas i had about SEO...that bigger categories were to hard to get into and that it was all about getting ones items found in search.

I learned that:
1. Big categories like 'Mens Bracelet' Womens Bracelet' are within reach!
2. It's not about us/our items. It's all about what shopper's need!

SO HERE ARE SOME SEO GOALS:

1. Get on the first few pages of search for key categories for our shops, especially our BIG categories
2. POPULARIZE items we can sell many times over creating CASH COWS
3. Gain greater insight into WHAT SELLS in our shops

I should warn you, SEO can be a bit of work, especially is you have a lot of listings BUT it can be a major difference for achieving your sales goals on Etsy.

Next Up, we work on,
1. Selecting Primary Keyword Phrases
2. Building Optimized Titles and Tags
3. Understanding How and Why Listing Get on the First

Thanks Clarissa! I've heard that maximizing the number of photos for a listing can help with SEO too. In your research on SEO how important do you think that is? You may get to photos later, but I thought of the question now. Thanks!

@sockprints - yes, i've heard that 5 pics helps with seo and using etsy's new language, it likely help to improve the 'listing quality'. If the search algorithm compares two shops one with 1 pic and the other with 5, it might be set to give the edge to the one with 5 pics (the thinking is likely that 5 pics delivers a better customer experience).

but maybe the distinction wouldn't be so big between 4 and 5 pics though?..not sure. However, i think it's possible to still have good results with just 2-3 pics.
