"Sales Strategy" --- Do you really need a coordinated sales strategy? Absolutely, if you want to sale to work best for you!

First, like any project, knowledge is power and good thinking is added power too for your sales strategy. I will try to make this short yet essential points too!

A sales strategy will focus your efforts on your most important customer audiences, existing or potential.

Always the two most essential questions an Etsy Shop Owner needs to ask and answer each and every day are:

"Who are my customers?" and "What are my customers looking to buy?"

Why? Perhaps you would just like to make your product and have fun doing it and hope what you make people will buy. This is the hardest and least effective way to make sales; unless to just happened by accident to create what people like to buy.

Don't leave things to chance. Just making what you want to make means you have a "hobby" and not necessarily a "business" --- well, perhaps we can call it a "hobby business." How do I know this? I understand this well because I would like to make what I enjoy making and hope others like it too. This is why there are lots of "starving artists" and lots of Etsy Shops with little sales.

Much better and much easier and much more successful is to start with the two essential questions. Then offer shoppers precisely what they are looking to buy!

Make sense? They are looking to buy a "widget" or two; so, you make "widgets" and really good "widgets" and promote them well and guess what they are much more likely to buy your "widgets" than something you created because you just liked it yourself.

2nd Bottom Line: Offer shoppers what they are "not" looking to buy?

What out for this non-productive issue too! "Have a Clearance Sale of everything that is not selling." No, no, and no. If shoppers are not looking to buy it; they will not buy it. This is plain and it is simple too!

Offer the products that shoppers really truly want to buy for your sale! Then the added incentive of a reduced price and savings will become the frosting on the cake to make the sale!

Simple, simple, and simple.

If it is not selling and not what your shoppers are looking to buy, maybe just donate it to your favorite charity that wants it and you might be able to take a tax deduction for it; check with a tax specialist or IRS on this.

Now, that we have this out of the way; let's consider together some SALES STRATEGY stuff. Sure, it will read like a textbook, but that's what we read to get educated more.

Here are the most important things to keep in mind when designing a sales strategy.

• Create a sales plan.

Having a document that outlines your sales goals and strategies will help you to stay on track and assess your progress. As you begin to define your sales plan, keep these things in mind:

◦ Sales goals:

These goals should be specific and measurable, not something like selling a million units. Base them on the nature of your product and try to break them down into manageable parts. For example, sell 50 units to end-users in 30 days.

◦ Sales activities:

These are your tactics -- how you plan to make the sale. You may say you'll sell direct-to-consumer through a website or via craft shows, for instance. [Keep in mind that you can make direct sales at craft shows especially in the 4th quarter of each year. This will allow you to get to know better "who your customers really are" person to person.

◦ Timelines:

Put dates to all of the above elements so you can define your steps within a realistic timeline. Don't forget that your timelines should be fluid--if you're underachieving, your sales plan can help you figure out why and define the corrective steps you need to take.

Most important of all and it is the very first habit of Steve Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" (the book) is to BE PROACTIVE!

Please let me share with you an example here. Big retailers rarely put everything in their shops are sale at one time; why? They get you in the store with what is called the "loss leader" which is something all shoppers really want enough to drive to the shop to get it. In our case click on our shop to get it via computer, tablet, or phone.

On this thread you may post 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 of your listings and 1 link to one of your treasuries (more about treasuries later on a different thread).

I recommend you post either 1 or 3 or 5. There is a very long explanation for this but I will not share it here.

These 1 or 3 or 5 will be your "Loss Leaders" - yet, you will still be able to break even or make a little profit on them; I hope.

"Bundle" is the big buzzword of the year. "Combo" has been another big buzzword too.

The word "FREE" is the most powerful word in sales. However, Free means something given without some obtained; maybe?

Here is a quick sales strategy plan for putting 4 items on sale for 25% Off.

I show each of these 4 items on sale for 25% Off.

Or, maybe I do it this way:

I show "Buy 3 Get 1 Free!"

Studies do show that "Buy 3 Get 1 Free!" gets more sales that "4 Items at 25% Off"

Studies also suggest that the word "SALE" is much more sale oriented than "coupon code" --- yet we use "coupon code" a whole lot because that is how the Etsy system works for us.
