Who selects payment method?

I am 3 for 3 with wholesale buyers not selecting their desired payment method. It was my understanding that when placing their order, they would select their payment method from my list of approved methods for my shop. Is this not the case? As it is, I have to contact buyers directly each time to see which of my approved payment options I should select when accepting their order.

If they have all simply missed this option, it indicates that the option needs to be more prominent.

I agree with this sentiment. I just received an order, and my buyer didn't indicate a payment method. So I had to select a method for the order to process. It doesn't make sense...

I've already established what payment methods I'm willing to accept... Do the buyers get a choice? If so, maybe it should be displayed more prominently--or be a required field.

If not, they should be given a choice!

Currently the buyers do not have a choice of payment method. It is up to the vendor to pick. We made this change when we simplified the buyer side of the purchase order system. I will discuss bringing this back in the buyer Purchase Order view with the team.

I just got my first wholesale order and in the order for "payment options" the only one on the drop down is direct checkout. Is that because PayPal is off-site, or is that just not an option on Etsy Wholesale? I should have it set up so I can accept both.

Hello Sarah,

You can choose more than just Direct Checkout. You need to go to https://www.etsy.com/wholesale/your/policies. You can then select a variety of off-site payment methods. Once you add more payment methods the drop down on your Purchase Order will have more choices. Note that if you use PayPal you must do that through PayPal - Etsy Wholesale and PayPal are not currently integrated.

My question is, if we as sellers choose "Etsy Direct Checkout" as the method of payment, how is payment actually made? Is there a checkout option shown to the buyers? Is a listing creating for them to purchase?

Same question for if PayPal was the chosen method. Would I end up having to create an invoice in PayPal to send to them?

I'm not sure about the Direct Checkout, as far as Paypal is concerned, yes, you will have to invoice them separately through Paypal, I had to do it a couple times and had no problems. I'm curious about DC.....

We're quite new here and already involved in some wholesale purchases. So thanks for making all this possible!

We were a bit confused by choosing the payment methods for the customer. Wouldn't it be more efficient if the buyer was prompted to choose this and perhaps given the opportunity to pay for it directly so we can ship directly.

Thanks for the feedback. We are implementing your suggestions into our next revision of the purchase order system. We originally allowed the buyer to select their preferred payment method based on your options, but then removed this field along with a few others in an effort to streamline and simplify the process for the buyer. The idea here was that we wanted to make it super quick & easy for the buyer to submit. We now realize that this actually adds an extra step for the seller since they have to ask the buyer how they want to pay. When we release updates to the purchase order flow we intend to allow the buyer to select their payment method, and then give you the flexibility to change it if desired (for example if they say they will pay by check but you would prefer a first time buyer to pay by credit card).

Julie Ann - if Etsy Direct Checkout is selected as the payment method, there will be a huge green button at the top of the invoice which will allow the buyer to make payment right there and then. We do not currently have an integration with paypal, so a separate invoice would have to be sent off the platform.

Has this ever been changed? I just had my first transaction using Etsy Wholesale and was really confused that despite my offering 3 ways for customers to pay in my policies I was forced to choose just one upon approving their PO. It seems that should be the buyers option to choose - not mine.
Upon searching for an answer I found this thread, but it seems to be rather old so I wasn't sure if it was ever resolved. Can someone please update me if I'm missing something or this just hasn't been changed at all? I'd love to avoid the extra step of having to ask a customer how they'd like to pay.

Hi Kate,

I believe I explained this via email so sorry if I may be repeating myself. This has not yet been implemented but we are working on it! For now, sellers select the payment method but can be updated upon the buyer's request!
