Can I add things to a customer's open order?

Jump to solution
I had a customer, who I gave a guest pass to (this is not the one from the other day, btw) and she placed an order. The order was about $25 under minimum, but before I emailed her she has since messaged me that she wants to add another necklace and a pair of earrings.

Is there a way I can do it for her? I think she's new to Etsy, and I don't even know if she can add things on her end since she already submitted it and I just need to approve it. I guess I could add it under miscellaneous charges but I'd like to add the actual items if possible.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Currently, changes can be made to an order prior to invoicing. If your buyer wishes to make any changes to an already invoiced PO, they can submit a new PO with the additional items or you can create a custom Etsy listing for checkout.

We are definitely listening to your feedback and looking into ways to make this process easier for both parties. We'll keep you posted on any updates.

Thanks again for your patience!

hi Sarah,

Sorry about the inconvenience in fulfilling your order.

Once an order has been submitted by the buyer, you can change the quantity of a product in that order. However, you cannot add new products to that purchase order.

If the necklace and earring that the buyer is asking for are already included in the purchase order, you will be able to increase their quantity and bill the user. Else, you will have to either ask the buyer to start a new purchase order, or add the miscellaneous charges as you mentioned.

Thanks!

Any plans to allow for this in the future? I'm dealing with the same situation- just got an order that's under my minimum, so the customer is going to need to add a few products. Seems like a bit of a hassle for them to have to submit a whole new purchase order, don't you think?

I read the thread about why buyers are allowed to submit orders that are under our minimums, and it makes sense- but since the resolution for many of us is going to involve adding some additional products to the order, it would be nice to have the option to edit a purchase order accordingly.

Yeah, Brooke we are definitely thinking about ways to support this workflow.

I think the simplest way to do it would be to allow you to "un-submit" an order, and send it back to the buyer. That way they could make any necessary changes and resubmit.

Would that make sense to you from a customer interaction perspective, or would you rather be able to just add the products yourself?

Awesome! I think un-submitting and allowing the buyer to make changes would be fine.

Has there been any work on this feature yet?
A buyer wants me to add an item to the purchase order, and I feel it is exceedingly unprofessional to have to ask her to re submit a whole new purchase order. This is something I come across all the time in wholesale orders off my website.
Buyers email me to add other items they forgot to order originally, and I add them to the invoice.

Its a feature that I really need here.

Chiming in as we just experienced this problem earlier today as well - we had accepted the invoice which then locked it from either our buyer or ourselves being able to adjust quantity of any items. She wanted to add quantity to an item on the purchase order, and neither of us were able to. To do so would require a completely new purchase order and that's just silly.

Also - the buyer really needs to be able to change their payment method after an invoice is accepted or submitted. We've had this issue multiple times now where the buyer didn't specify at first how they would be paying and we were unable to change the method without them submitting a whole new order. This is way too much of a hassle to ask of our buyers.

Wanted to also add my vote to this feature request. A fairly typical scenario for me is that a buyer will start an order by picking items they like, and then ask me to add some of my best selling items to the order. The buyer just wants me to add the items, and then they can approve it. Sending links to items and having them need to edit or create a new invoice isn't very efficient and seems to expect a bit too much from the buyer. Would definitely like to see a better way to collaborate with the buyer to create an order.

Oh yes, Andy I get that scenario fairly often too. Didn't even think of it.

We really need the option to be able to add product to invoices!

I've had a few customers request additional items for an open order, but since it's not possible to do that, I've either had to cancel the order and have them start all over, or I've set up a listing on the regular Etsy site that has the additional items they wanted, so it's a 2 part order that ships together. Neither solution is super professional, but maybe others here have better ideas on how to handle this?

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for getting in touch about this. We understand this is a limitation in our order system. We will be working on giving sellers more flexibility in the future, including the ability to add new products to an open order before it has been invoiced. Currently, the buyer would have to submit an additional PO with the new items. We apologize for the inconvenience!
