what's with promotion threads?

I am really new here and am exploring all of my options for promoting my shop. I am a bit unclear about the promotion threads on a lot of the teams here. It looks to me like I just post a listing link and walk away. Some of these threads have 100's of posts. How, in the world does this help my shop? People just post listings in a bunch of threads that no one actually reads? Am I missing something here?

I don't think that kind of "promoting" does any good unless the person who posts after you is interested in what you have to offer. I'm on a team that does promoting on a schedule with a different promotional activity M-F... and that really works. Convo me if you want to check out the team... not sure if it's ok to advertise another team here :)

I don't know, sometimes I see people searching to promote your shop on their blog or things like that. I keep a couple of teams like that around and check them out every so often.
