Re: web site

There are lots of different ways besides relying on one, so website workable of course. But you need more time to handle them. I get the advice in my discussion that at first you need to target ur market area.

Re: web site

If it's all new to you, start with a blog, or even just a well followed twitter account. Otherwise a website is just one more thing to try and promote, and without a built-in social network around it, it's hard to get traffic.

Re: web site

I've been working with Wix to create a site. I have one built for when my sales can pay for it. I've found their editor to be really simple and easy to use. It seems like a little much at first, but it's really just a point, type, click type of builder and they have tons of templates to use from. Wordpress is good as well, I just prefer my store to look like a store as opposed to a blog, there may be ways around that though.

Re: web site

I strongly recommend 'securing your URL' even if you aren't ready for a site/blog.

Our site started as an SEO wrapper for a single page of 'products' Actually, the products were pictures that represented each category we had in our venue shop (Artfire in our case, but Etsy would work just as well). Basically, you can build content, your background story, and all sorts of bells and whistles while using Etsy to actually be your shopping engine.

I did this so I could direct all my outside advertising at my own site, then pass the sales process over to 'Etsy.' It's a short term win/win, and honestly, I wouldn't have built my own ecommerce site if AF didn't start cross promoting other peoples stuff...

Just my thoughts and my approach for the first 3 years...
Matt
