the hand of the dilligent vs slothfulness

Recently I've been reading this blog on wordpress and it is a motivational blog. One post got on the subject of how the wealthy countries like the United States became so wealthy. The answer was we work hard for what we have. That's why its so wrong to not work hard but to steal instead. That's being lazy. The bible even says "the hand of the diligent shall be made fat.".

We can apply this to etsy or whatever we do. We may not see success over night but eventually we *will* see success. The first show I went to I spent the month before and was busy making stuff to fill my booth. People came by and I made $60 something dollars in a few hours. Then it started raining. I could have sold over $100. worth had it not rained!

People on etsy who sell a lot work probably harder than any group of people I know, some work long into the night . so success doesn't come easy. I really admire all the hard work you people put into your shops. I'm going to work just as hard between now and the spring. I plan on making $100. My first event. I know with diligence and hard work anyone can be a sucsess with this.

I'm so glad I chose this business. Chime in here if you work hard and let us know how you became successful.

R.

On here every day, working on photos, tags, etc.
My shop is a continuing work in progress.
I work hard... well, since I love it I don't know if I'm allowed to call it work.
;)

You are so right Rhonda, that reminds me of what I was reading in Proverbs this morning. When we prioritize in the right areas and put gaining wisdom over material things the work comes effortlessly especially when you know who's really in charge. I am also a firm believer in if you don't work you don't eat.

I put God first in my life and everything else is second and that alone gives me all the drive I need :-)

Re: the hand of the dilligent vs slothfulness

At first the motivation to work comes from seeing all the things that need to be done/can be done with the business and doing them. Then, as they are done and the shop improves, the motivation to work comes from having taken people's $ and their expectation of a product in return :)

However, I am a fan of working both smart and hard - any place you can make the business more efficient without sacrificing quality (or too much $) is good.

I totally agree with Rhonda and can definitely relay to Sara. I am blessed that I don't have too much pressure economically. I am doing what I love and hopefully can earn back all the expenses on craft materials and so forth. I felt that if I dedicate to my shop, I should be fine. :)

Amen! What a great post! I can only credit God with the success of my shops, because I am not a naturally diligent person. He has blessed me way beyond what I ever expected, and I can't wait to continue growing my businesses! Keep up the good work!

My success has come from hard work, perseverance, selling thru multiple venues, and making things that I LOVE to make rather than just making whatever is trendy at the moment.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm going to find the link to that mans blog. So inspiring....what a great motivator he is. Well I'm also a believer in Jesus and I believe God blesses hard work. There should also be moderation too. Working hard is good but we also need rest and play as well and exercise.

I love drawing so that part doesn't really feel like work - but all the editing, photography, promoting etc is hard work. I wouldn't say I was really successful, but hopefully one day- just keeping my head down and carrying on.

I agree with Yvonne- it is all the editing and promoting... ugh. I think it is a roller coaster- at my dips I wonder if I am crazy to try to make a living in the arts- at my high points I know I was meant to do this. I think we don't let anyone, any event, or any negative feedback get in the way of our arts and crafts dreams! Thank you Etsy :)

Yup, it can be hard work - long hours, back-breaking, full of ups and downs but if your heart is in it, you just keep going regardless :)

Just type in WordPress.com and when you get to that site type in the title of the blog or address of blog. Great blog and has inspired me to realize my dreams of having a successful business and pursuing entrpeneurship as a fiber artist.
