Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I do think the more items you have the better your shop will do, but there really is no magic number.

I took a peek at your shop and before you focus on increasing the number of items you have, I'd focus on taking better photos -- maybe use a white background -- get rid of the blurry ones, take the items out of the organza bags. If you don't want to use white backgrounds, use the same background for the photos so there's a unity in your shop. Your titles also need work -- two or three word titles just don't cut it here on Etsy. Check out this article on SEO for tips: http://www.etsy.com/help/article/247

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

The more you have, the more views you will get, but then I reckon if you have over 300, buyers may get a little confused. I'm happily struggling to keep my items over 70 - happily, because the reason is that they sell :)

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I am at around 95 pieces. I will just keep on loading them up as I expand. I think that shop sections are important too. I figure, the larger the number of pieces the bigger the digital footprint. Hope that helps-

I am a newbie at around twenty (granted, I just opened this month) but wish to get to the hundred eventually! Hope all of the preview shops do the same :)

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I'm hovering at just under 300 and have seen a gradual increase of sales.. ideally I'd like to add even more. I don't think it looks too confusing by having so many items, as long as you use the different sections or organize it all.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I think it definitely helps to have more than less. More items to view equals more potential, right? Still hard to hit that number when you're one person though. Don't forget that each post costs. Outweigh the pros & cons before you go too big.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

IMO the best time to add as many new items as possible is when you're a brand new shop.... Remember that your items stay up for 4 months.. what I tried to do within those 4 months was to add as much as I could (just about every day, if possible), and once the 4 months were up and things started to expire, I could renew those expired items daily and still regularly keep the shop feeling 'fresh'.. plus at that point, I could slow down on providing brand new items if I wanted because I'd always have something to renew. That wouldn't work for everybody but it can be something to consider.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I've just got over 100 items listed and haven't noticed anything different in sales but it's the wrong time of year for me as everyone is doing their christmas shopping not buying for their wedding. New years will be a better indication.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I started my shop in August, in Jewelry and I am pleased. I had 300 views yesterday (cyber monday) and 1 sale. I'm happy. My sales have been steady, slow but steady, since opening. I have found no difference in the amount of sales, only the amount of views as I went from 30 or 40 pieces to nearly 100 in November. I think the key, for me at least is lots of different items. A huge varietly of gemstones, categories and syles. I have worked hard, and kept my chin up even thru my dry spell in Oct. In stead of letting myself get down during quiet spells I used that energy to redo, revamp, rethink or just have a little down time. Like any industry this season will surely weed out some Etsy sellers. Which will you be :)

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I don't know what the 'key' is (I think there are several factors that make this Etsy thing work!!)...but personally, I'm aiming for *100*, too. I just had this conversation this morning with someone else!! (I presently have 64) Whatever 'it' easy...I'm striving to make my shop bigger & better every day. If only I were paid by the hour!! :)

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I have been hearing that 100 is key over and over again but am only around 90. i am adding more slowly but not seeing a pickup in sales quite yet. It is something that you have to just keep working at. I have been getting more and more views and hearts the more items i have so i am hoping that more sales will follow!

As always titles and tagging is very important as well for more views : )

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

we are new in here. got only 23 items. I don't know if there is a number that we need to aim. I have my visits increasing day by day but no sales yet.
So is the mumber of items the main factor for sales?
Is the number of visits?
is the circles?
People that fav our items and our shop ???
don't know but etsy need's lots of work in order to start selling.
Have faith and work hard.
we will see.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I have been up around 90 items, 3 Etsy sales. sold some at shows and so removed them from my shop, and a few expired items I haven't renewed because I'm trying to phase out a few things, so right now I'm at 67, with another 8-10 things in progress or awaiting photographing... my other shop (jewelry) has about 120 items and it has had 9 sales... So I think more is good, but not necessarily key.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

Gregory...it's not one main thing, it's MANY that makes this all come together. You start with a great product, take GREAT photos, title them & tag them (correctly) and PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE!! And you don't stop because while you stop, other shops are adding and renewing and you end up at the bottom of the barrel. Views & favorites are nice, but they're not sales...and they may never turn into sales. Although I'm aiming for '100'...there is no *magic* to Etsy...it's just a lot of hard work!!! GOOD LUCK to you (and everyone)!!!

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I started to notice a spike in views after getting to about 80 items. I try to stay around 100, but that's pretty hard for me to do.

However, having lots of items won't mean much unless your titles and tags are also set up for relevancy, and your photos are eye-catching. Like Judy says, there are many factors that go into making sales. On Etsy, every little detail counts, and even with every detail taken care of, it can still be hard to make a sale.

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I have over 100 but think that the more you have on sale should make for more potential customers coming to view them as the more you have up the more people searching are likely to come across something they like in your shop

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

This month I went from having about 45 items to having about 145 items. It was a TON of work listing and photographing them all. I think I listed the last 40 or so over this Thanksgiving week too :)

I have not noticed any big differences. I did have 3 sales last week, which was my best week ever (haha, sad, but I still consider myself a newbie :). My views have not gone up exponentially or anything like that, but it is interesting to see all the ways I'm being "found" and the various items that people look at. I do find that people seem to stay in my shop longer and I get more hits from within my shop and within my listings than I used to.

I would think that everything is extra hard for jewelry sellers though since it's such a saturated market here on Etsy, so maybe the magic number for us is more than 100? It gets difficult to organize your items when you have so many though!

Re: started to think 100 items is the key to make more sales

I've noticed a little peak in views when I add a new item to my shop, although I don't have many items listed. So I guess, make sure not to list all of the new items at once, but gradually over a period of time. (Say, one or two every couple of days.) Also, with what someone said earlier: You should consider taking better product photos. Blurry pictures will turn a potential customer away, because they won't know exactly what they're getting. Also try to keep the background uniform for each of the display photos - overall, your shop will look more organized and professionally presented. (White or off white, such as ivory or a very light brownish white, are often good choices for background colors.)
