I just did my first Tophatter auction last night! According to the other people chatting during the auction, it was a "dead" night, so I was just happy that I got a bid! I'm going to try a different time of day and different auction category to see if that makes a difference.
I would suggest being in the auction room to chat during the auction. It helps to comment on other people's items and give more specific info on your own item. Even though you have a description with the item, the auction moves so fast that people don't necessarily have time to read it. So chat away about your item when your time is up!
