is it just me??

I continue to be surprised at how many sellers will send a message (even one of thanks) simply from my favoriting their item or shop. I posted a thread about this a good while ago and its happened more lately than ever. I have heard from many people its a no no. I find it perplexing. I have never and would never do that, even though I am quite thankful. I think its enough to (if it strikes my fancy) click on their shop and favorite an item I like, and or their shop. I need to hear what other people think about this...please share your thoughts

Re: is it just me??

Most of the time, I think, it's new sellers. I don't care for it, but delete it and move on.

Re: is it just me??

I think its often people who are new to Etsy and don't know what is correct to do . They think it is being polite and what you are meant to do but don't realise that it is frowned upon in the community. I personally do not thank people for favouriting me even though I am really grateful. Often people will favourite without having the intention to buy your product and they are just browsing and like what you have for sale.

Re: is it just me??

I agree! I think it's annoying. I get excited every time I have an etsy message thinking that someone has a question for me or wants to talk to me and then it turns out to be a "thanks for liking my shop". It feels like a spam email! Very unpersonal and off putting!

Re: is it just me??

I'm sure it's new people. I never did it, as I'd read it was considered spam, but when I first opened a shop it felt wrong to me not to respond to favorites. I felt someone was complimenting me and I was ignoring them. A newbie thing, just delete.

Re: is it just me??

I don't do that but I have a similar question....lately I have been contacting the sellers whose items I put into my treasuries, just to let them know they were featured. My only reasoning for this is that after you are in so many circles, you miss a lot of activity in the activity feed unless you are only checking "your shop" or "your" activity, and sometimes you wouldn't see that your item got put into a treasury.

Do people not like this either? Should I stop?

Many sellers do message me back to say thank you, but being new to Etsy I'm not sure if this is bad etiquette.

Thanks for the info!

Re: is it just me??

Marie, I always send a quick convo to let people know I used their item in a treasury. I use Shmetsy so it sends out a bulk convo to all featured sellers. Not too long ago I received a treasury convo from a seller that I thought was perfect so I've since taken her idea. She sent a short convo that just said something like "Hi, I've featured your item in my treasury. No need to reply to this convo." The next time I created a treasury I did the same thing and I didn't get a single reply to my convos (usually I get a few). Nobody felt obligated to reply - they could just delete it, check out the treasury and move on. :)

Re: is it just me??

@Maria Lopez - I appreciate folks who notify me that I was included in a Treasury. (I often miss stuff in my activity feed!). I always view & comment the treasury and promote it after being notified.

Re: is it just me??

Yes, I want to know when I am in a Treasury. I always reciprocate. If they take the time to pick out my item for their Treasury then let me know......they deserve a "heart" or two.

I agree, new people that are trying to be polite usually send thanks. I was one of those back in the day.....But some understanding shop owners sent me nice notes and explained why it was usually a no no.

But I don't mind a shout out once in a while if someone really likes one of my products

Re: is it just me??

I do not write to everyone who faves my items, but I reply to messages I get when people include my things in treasuries, I do not write long, just simple thanks, and I usually check out their shops and fav a few things I really like!

Re: is it just me??

I totally agree, treasuries are very different. I also always reply, at the very least a thank you to anyone who uses my item in a treasury and give lots of hearts. I also relate with getting excited that I have a new message, just to be disappointed that its a favorite-thanks. I always feel a bit mean being annoyed with them, but I cant help it. it is a bit tacky. I was curious what you all thought and thanks so much for contributing your opinions!

Re: is it just me??

Just want to clarify that it is DEFINITELY against the rules of etsy to message people who favorite your items or store. In the rules it says these things are not invitations to message people.

It's also really really annoying. For example, I run a blog that features eight etsy items a day. This means I favorite a couple hundred items a month to make sure I don't post something twice. Could you imagine how crazy I would be if all of those people messaged me to say thank you? I usually politely tell anyone who does it that it's against the rules and delete it. The majority of them just have no idea, it's like another poster said, they think they're being polite.

Re: is it just me??

I get so excited when I get a convo, thinking it's a custom order request so when I got a convo b/c I favorited someone's shop, I was appreciative for being noticed for liking their shop, but was disappointed that it wasn't a potential sale, so I say no to the convo! =)

Thanks for all of your replies!! I will keep sending messages to the sellers for including their items in treasuries! Don't worry...I keep it very short and sweet! :)

Re: is it just me??

I joined Shop Stats Improvements team and the treasury shows up on my stats page. I do hope they keep this feature, it's very convenient. I don't notify people who favorite my items or store, or when I put them in treasuries.

Re: is it just me??

@Judy, I like your post; the Shmetsy suggestion and the part about "treasury, no need to reply." Those two things are very helpful.

I've always thought it good manners to thank someone for including my items in a treasury when they send a convo. It's good to know it's not necessary to actually send a convo of thanks back as long as we post thanks on the treasury.

As far as thanking someone for favorites, it's easy to understand why someone would want to. What's good manners in the home turns out to be bad manners on Etsy. Let's not make it a serious crime. What I do is add that person to my circle. That's acceptable, isn't it?

It's so important to know good etiquette on Etsy. Could we also discuss others things perceived as rude or spam, or just not necessary?

Re: is it just me??

I agree! I consider those types of messages spam. It does get rather annoying, and does seem to be on the increase.

There are times when I get a new message and I think yay a potential customer! Then it turns out to be a seller spamming me. That's not nice.

Re: is it just me??

I'm new, but I've never done it, as I know it's annoying.
I'm receiving lots of these emails recently, and some of them also offered me a coupon code to be used in their shop.

Re: is it just me??

I know I'm going against the tide here but I think its a nice thing to do. I've never actually thought of doing that but I certainly wouldn't be offended just because someone thought they would take the time to thank me for checking out their stuff. I know it gets your hopes up but new sales aren't the be all and end all of Etsy are they? Isn't it nice that, that personal element is there?
