has this happened to anyone else?

I received this email, in my yahoo account, and after reading it over and over and seeing everything I would trust, I naively put in personal information, and immediately something told me it was a mistake. I contacted etsy and it is a fraudulent email. I also had something terrible happen today, someone somehow got my debit card info, (which other than this suspicious email situation, I am very safe with) and attempted a very large amount to something called joker.com and was denied, then succeeded at 4 separate small charges to joker.com google voice google.com and google marketplace.
if you see charges on your bank statement that say that, look into it.
I feel like an idiot. telling my fiancé the story tonight, he couldn't believe I would do something so stupid. he made a good point, has etsy ever sent me an email asking me for my credit card information before? nope. why should they? I have had to cancel my card and order a new one, and I hope it doesn't cause too much of a headache to set it up again.
I copy/pasted the email, I hope no one else gets scammed by this

Wow, that's awful. Thanks for the warning. I've been on Etsy since 2008 and have never received any such email. Good luck to you!

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

This email has been making the rounds quite heavily. Etsy has chimed in that is absolutely is not from them, and not something they would EVER send. Also that ALL email correspondance from them would be from etsy.com (this was sent from etsy-update.com)

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

You should NEVER give out personal details over an email, for business or not! Not even to people you know! Etsy would NEVER ask for your details - even your bank won't!

In situations like these you really must double-check the email address it was sent from. Etsy doesn't use hyphons in theirs, like etsy-update. Next to no one does. If ever you receive messages like this, it'll be from a scammer. It is SO easy to just buy an email address like that, you can usually get them through any domain name register.

The problem of course is that you're rarely shown the email address until you open the email. I get messages in my scam folder that seem to genuinely come from paypal, but their email address always says different. It can be a simple thing of changing the .com to a .co.uk - when in doubt, compare it to their website.

I'm sorry this has happened. It's awful what people do for money.

Kim is right. No legitimate company will ask you to confirm personal information through an email link. When in doubt, always go directly to the website using the https URL and confirm your info there.

I've gotten these types of emails saying they're from ebay and Paypal but never Etsy.

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

Well at least you had the nagging feeling and shut it down as soon as you did or it could of been a real headache. I know for me I did not know things like this happened until I read it in a forum like this so thank you if it is helping people, so I can see how people get scammed as if you are not really scammer savvy you really do not think suspiciously on everything unfortunately I am now which is good and bad it is good because I can stop something before it starts and it is said because I have to.

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

im glad you all were less naieve than me! I stupidly thought, well I trust etsy, this looks 100% legit. if they want my info I should give it to them.
hindsight it so clear! Its so sad because, I thought twice, but did it anyway. THEN I acted smartly and wrote etsy. the damage was done, and now Ive learned my lesson.
I went back through all my emails, and its scary how official it looks

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for the heads up! I received an email like that from paypal once. It was crazy how everything looked exactly like the other emails paypal sends me, and then I looked at the email address and realized it was a scam.

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

the scariest thing ive heard is phony tax returns in honest peoples names and even having honest returns sent straight to the crooks home addresses. I cant stand greedy hacker scammer con artists. they hurt all the good hard working people. I didn't have much to take, but it seriously brings out rage in me!

Erin - thank you very much for posting this warning. Scams are everywhere and any of us can be caught at any time. Sharing this information is a very important warning - both specifically to this con, but also as a reminder to be careful always.

Re: has this happened to anyone else?

thanks for the share. You probably already know this by now but if you ever get an email that looks suspicious do not click links in the email. Go directly to the company's website and investigate. You an always copy and paste the email that looks suspicious directly to the company through their website so they can verify or deny. It also alerts them to the fact that scammers are out there using their ID.

Hope you don't have any negative fall-out from this experience.
